A beautiful, often expressionistic film, banned for over 20 years by the russian authorities. The only film Alexander Askoldov ever made, and that's just sad. There's so many unique and lyrical images here, and some hellishly evocative editing (a childbirth sequence is extreme in this regard). A scene where one of the characters walk outside the house and into the sunlight and make himself ready for work, is just too fucking good.
