"Kon-Tiki" was the name of a wooden raft used by six Scandinavian scientists, led by Thor Heyerdahl, to make a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The purpose of the expedition was to prove Heyerdahl's theory that the Polynesian Islands were populated from the east - specifically Peru - rather than from the west (Asia) as had been the theory for hundreds of years. Heyerdahl's theory was wrong, but he left us with a thoroughly fascinating document of a high seas expedition. Kon-Tiki is both one of the finest documentaries I've seen and one of the finest adventure movies, combining into something greater than the sum, a great real life maritime adventure movie.

A fascinating and unbelievable subject always makes for an interesting doc. There's little attempt to create dramatic tension, the end result is clear and the film is mostly short scenes about different aspects of survival in the high seas on a raft. But the narrator is charismatic and the subject itself gives the film all the tension it needs to be compelling from start to finish.

Well this confirms that the 2012 film was a waste of time and money, this is a much better told version of the adventure. I was worried that it would be very dry (heh) but the crew of six did a very good job filming exciting things given the circumstances and the narration is very good.

Shows how far anthropology has come since 1950, but, scientific theories aside, it's a fascinating account of a rather different sort of impulse.
