For a movie about giant monsters that's part of a cinemaghhh (sorry, almost threw up in my mouth) cinematic universe, this was pretty allright! Characters can die suddenly and amusingly, everything looks and sounds OK and it moves along nicely. Am I extra positive since so many other recent blockbusters left me feeling dead inside, more than usual? Maybe. Probably. But I also saw a giant ape beat the shit out of a giant lizard monster and for a brief moment, life was good.

I found some of the dialogue to be kind of weak or cheesy at times, and the first act feels kind of rushed, but overall, I thought this was extremely entertaining. Roberts is a director I'll be looking out for. The visual effects were awesome and there were a lot of great angles and shots that made this feel like an 70s monster-flick, and that's exactly what I wanted. The pawns, or characters, were actually well-acted too. A really good time. I'd say it's worth the trip.

Overall a fun watch and it looks great with plenty of stunning visuals on show. Its a monster movie mashed up with a Vietnam war film. Most of the cast were pretty good although somewhat two dimensional. The tone was uneven with jumps from serious drama to comedy that felt a bit jarring, there's some clunky dialogue and it's a bit too long. I liked its running theme that was critical of war and how it affects both civilians and soldiers. At its best it seemed like a modern day predator film.

Haha, this is just straight-up Apocalypse Now with giant monsters! I was extremely agnostic towards the 2014 Godzilla (and this film walking in, for the record) and it did a fine job winning me over. Incredibly solid cast playing mostly bland characters, though John C. Reilly does get to have some fun. The CGI monsters occasionally feel weightless, but overall this film did a better job than anything else in years at taking me on a real ADVENTURE that evoked the feel of classic Indiana Jones.

The first half of this film is well constructed, well paced and boasting an (for the genre) surprisingly large roster of almost three-dimensional characters to root for. And it's this initial goodwill that drives it home through the scattershot "monster-meh" that is the second half, which unfortunately feels like, they ran out of steam after the first Kong encounter... Still it's never less than entertaining.

Kong takes on the criticism for previous iterations, showcasing the King during the cold open, and subsequently delivering a movie that is not just stylised but fun, embracing its silliness but not beholden to it. The plot and the characters are both shallow, and act merely as means to the film's raison-d'être: monster fights. This is what the film delivers on; well-choreographed fight scenes, lots of explosions and monsters. Reilly is the only standout cast member.

Rather selfishly, any film that matches CCR's Run Through the Jungle (from my student film) with Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again (from the climax of my favorite movie), AND adds a Cannibal Holocaust reference, is A-OK in my book. One could say the film is a fascinating example of current blockbuster cinema technique meeting old-school film tropes. Another could say this is a damned good time. Both are right.

Besides a script that carries a strong "eight revisions by ten script doctors" vibe, this is a highly enjoyable monster movie made by a director who must seriously fucking love Apocalypse Now. (My dude!) It also feels like a film made for everybody who complained about Godzilla '14, as it goes in the complete opposite direction, favoring front-to-back setpieces and charismatic actors galore instead of a long, slow buildup. It probably could've used a little more tension, in fact, but oh well.

Look Im the guy who's watched godzilla vs megalon more than once and even updated my rating to a higher score after repeat viewings. Of course i liked this. Its got plenty of wild fun giant monsters and Kong himself gets a roaring entrance and a satisfying final battle. The story is whatever, but nice to have a Kong movie skip taking him back to New York. One note characters are enlivened by Jackson, goodman, hiddleston and reilly. Loved the humor.

What we have here is a standard monster movie formula executed with a much higher budget, actors talented enough to make their unimportant roles feel slightly more believable, and visuals/sound effects that actually make for a pretty immersive experience. This incarnation of Kong delivers on everything we've come to associate with him, and the monster fight scenes are top notch. Not as good as the classic monster movies (obviously), but hopefully we get more of this, less of Godzilla '14.

Nails that classic adventure movie-feel with its anticipation-building, crew-collecting first act, the dual-jungle trip suspense of the second, and awesome monster action that culminates in a wild third act. The cool aesthetic with its clever scene cuts, slow motion, and classic rock soundtrack only ups the fun factor. The characters are one-note but they're all you need for this kind of romp (though the surprisingly touching end credits with Reilly's hilarious Marlow adds a nice bonus arc).

The characters are so thin that the leads have to work very hard to get us to feel more than indifference for them & the rationale for the mission makes as much sense as poking a hornet's nest, but none of that matters since after the ponderous 3 hour Kong Peter Jackson gave us & 2 recent Godzilla snoozefests it's a cathartic joy to watch an unpretentious monster movie do things right. We're here for great CGI versions of monsters fighting & smashing puny humans & this -FINALLY! delivers!

The best Kong movie since the original. Taking the best elements of the remakes while trying to avoid their pitfalls, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts delivered an entertaining original take on the iconic ape. The film takes the King Kong mythos and infuses it with "Apocalypse Now"(1979) to make a wonderful monster B-movie. A creature feature with a fantastic cast unfortunately falls short in handling all the different people. Most of the characters feel undeveloped struggling to hold up the story.

It's easy to tell that Kong and the most recent Godzilla were made with the intent of relaunching the franchise. Studios who think long term are more apt to put a little TLC and a lot of money into something that they can't allow to fail. It shows, and aside from an awesome 70's soundtrack, Kong is packed full of awesome effects, awesome action, awesome thrills, and awesome awesomeness the whole way through. This is what creature features are all about.

I can't quite put this on the level of "Godzilla" as a feature, but in saying that, I admit to you that the cast of characters in this are more diverse and more investment-worthy, from Hiddleston to Larson to Reilly and Jackson, who ultimately steal the show. Skull Island's Kong is a sympathetic character completely. I do wish that we might have gotten a bit more about the culture of the Skull Island people but what we got was still satisfying. With that, bring on the crossover! I can't wait.

Who would've pinned this as a fun time at the movies?! My God, I'm still reeling from the fact that this was... good! Enough of the ensemble are decent characters with unique backgrounds. The Vietnam time setting is a stroke of genius. The direction is stylish. John C. Reilly improvises his way through most of his scenes. Some well-dosed moments of schlock. I'm delighted! It's by no accounts a perfect movie, or even a great one, but it's a fun way to spend a couple hours.

The Vietnam War angle just ruined the film for me. Was this guy making a King Kong flick, or Apocalypse Now? All of the actors (most of whom I like) were wasted, and every time they put a record on (because you totally take a record player along when you're running from monsters), I wanted to get up and leave. But the action was pretty intense, and I liked the horror moments. Plus points for each soldier squashed, ingested, or blown up.

Kong: Skull Island is the type of B-movie that kids will love, parents will love if they don't want to think or care a whole lot, and we'll all forget about it in a couple of weeks until the next MonsterVerse entry starts its promotional cycle. That's fine, I suppose. There's not a whole lot to hate here - it's a big, dumb action movie, one that's relatively entertaining and only marginally consequential. Come for the spectacle ... but probably don't expect much more.

Not bad, but it feels half baked. There's a good structure for an action adventure monster movie: A coherent theme, interesting character ideas, good actors, breathtaking scenes, etc. But none of it is fleshed out, so it all feels rote as the film moves from one part to the next, relying on clunky exposition rather than meaningful detail to put all the pieces together.

It's got its qualities. At times it felt like a vietnam's veteran nightmare.would have been nice if the director would have pursued this idea, instead of the bad editing and somehow constructing a mediocre plot around it. Kong: Skull Island is good popcorn fun and harmless escapism. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a filmmaker I'll be keeping an eye out for because visually there is a lot to admire and the Apocalypse Now vibe is a really interesting take on the source material. The ideas and the visual execution of this film are what kept my interest. But there is a real lack of both plot and character development and the likes of Hiddleston & Larson feel restrained by the undercooked script. Problematic yet entertaining.

Better than the new godzilla but surprisingly bland given the subject matter. So much of the movie is cinematic shots of Kong and/or Armed forces. Too many side character that do nothing of import. Hiddleston is less useful than initial impressions have us believe. Jing and Hawkins somehow end up with the crashed chopper even though they were on the ground doing surveys. CGI was decent enough.

Apocalypse Now + King Kong = actually a pretty great premise for a movie. John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly all take turns stealing scenes, while the Vietnam war movie visuals and the top-tier effects are delightful to look at. At times this movie maybe has a bit *too* much personality to actually settle down and tell an interesting story, but the performances and visuals overcome the haphazard plot more often than not.

Hiddleston who?, Brie Larson what?, Sam Jackson why? John C. Reilly stole the fucking show. I was half expecting him to ask Hiddleston how much he can bench during one of the scenes like he did Wahlburgers in Boogie Nights. This is a great big monster flick elevated with a Vietnam era soundtrack and inspired visuals. Kong as the "not so misunderstood" savage destroyer and near diety is a great twist to the giant primate we know and love. There's lots of not so subtle but well done camp in this.

All of these 'Nam tropes are kitschy and uninspired when they're being played straight, which is unfortunately half of the movie. At least until Reilly enters the proceedings, goofing up the scenery and doing samurai shit, and this film finally embraces ridiculousness on a level I can feel good about. Lots of neat set pieces, and a fun incarnation of Kong himself.

This had the same basic strengths and weaknesses Godzilla (2014) had. Cool, spectacular action sequences, but also basic, dull characters with bordering on terrible dialogue. There's a bunch of great actors in this, but they all come off as bad because of the weak writing. But yeah, the action scenes were decent, and the direction in general was good. Some good '70s rock songs on the soundtrack, but probably a few too many, like it was trying to be Guardians of the Galaxy or something.

Entertaining if ultimately unnecessary reboot/rehash of KONG is oftentimes a victim of its own overreach; an attempt to retell the familiar story through the lens of homage to APOCALYPSE NOW is intriguing at first, but the film can't quite decide if it wants to be frivolous entertainment or a more potent, politically charged fable. Still, it is beautifully shot and well-cast, with a charismatic return to form for Jackson.

Skull Island is frequently a visual spectacle and Vogt-Roberts knows how to frame up some fantastic shot sequences. However, the screenplay is empty, daft revisionism at best (albiet fairly innocuous) - a dated Kong routine, preamble of which goes on too long, though Jackson and Reilly are engaging. More disappointing is the ho-hum monster design, but as an appetiser to Legendary's 'franchise' it suffices by leaving us wanting. End of credits features the only legit spooky moment!

This is so bad, they saved the worst for first. Skull Island (are you trembling yet), is uncharted because it's surrounded by a perpetual storm. So to investigate what's there, for unexplained reasons, they send a ship with helicopters. But instead of the ship going through the storm, it waits outside so they launch their three helicopters to penetrate the storm because they're so much better at handling storms  --and those three copters inexplicably become 12, including a huge two rotor

It does what it's supposed to do. There isn't a lot of wasted time here with a build up that isn't interesting. It gets right to the action and keeps action coming from when they get on the Island until they leave. I'm not really sure what Larson and Goodman are doing here (my biggest complaint). John C Reilly gives an amazing performance. Shoutout to the "Good for your health" jacket (I'll take it as a Steve Brule reference instead of an Akira reference).

It was pretty weird that they decided to modernize King Kong by remixing it with Platoon and Apocalypse Now. I had the opportunity to see this in a theater full of rabid monster movie fans at G-Fest in Chicago, and in that sort of setting, you see how much Skull Island borrows from the pedigree of a certain other Legendary monster. Skull Island is a Japanese kaiju flick masquerading as a Hollywood blockbuster, oozing with indulgent setpieces and visual effects, setting up toy soldiers for the big bad monster to come and stomp on. Embrace the camp.

The first encounters with Kong and his insane island are really damn awesome. Good action and there is even some time reserved for beautiful atmospheric shots and a couple of neat angles. It's fun a lot of the time, the stacked cast all put in killer performances (even the woefully under-utilised Goodman), and the cinematography is frequently beautiful. But it also has a terrible script with awful character work and constant close-ups on extremely fake-looking CGI. The most development Hiddleston's character gets is that his dad is dead. Occasionally has some of the fun tone seen in the later trailers, but mostly another story of an indie director swallowed up by a blockbuster.

Kong: Skulk Island biggest flaws are of the same ones that ironically, Godzilla suffers from. Way under developed and unnecessary character motives drive this film, but it never really works despite some good performances all around. Too much exposition and dialogue really drag the movie along and it actually takes a bit to get going. The image is inherently fascinating, so much so that every poster is a rip off of Apocalypse Now. Beyond that single thought, everything else here is derivative, boring and chock full of endless exposition. Landing somewhere between blockbuster and B-movie, this film fails to entirely achieve the thrills of either category. There is effort made in the visuals, but it only occasionally pays off, and there are glimpses of tried-and-true slasher tropes, but there isn't the commitment necessary to make them all that fun. So it's nothing more than decent, but also nothing worse than below-average.

Solid for a monster movie, which are usually quite terrible. More style than substance but you expect that going into a movie called Kong: Skull Island. Didn't feel boring or bland throughout the runtime, it was alright, one nitpick is that tiny post-ending sequence didn't feel very necessary.

It's decent and there's a lot to like about this film but it just won't blow you away. You get to see a lot of Kong, the performances and actors involved are great, and the plot also has an interesting twist, with it being set in the 1970s. I think the ultimate problem is that because it's not the first incarnation of Kong, it's a little confusing as to where this stands exactly and feels a lot like a "set-up" film. Should be seen on the big screen though...if you like monster films.

I kinda liked the cinematography and colors, acting was cool too but. BUT. I see 4 writers here. Not one: four. The script remains putrid even if 8 hand have contributed to the final result. I'm shocked. More than a few times i've been thrown out of the atmosphere by a nonsense humor out of place as hell

I enjoyed much of Kong: Skull Island. The acting was top notch. Most of the parts acted seriously so it was refreshing when Reilly came into the picture because he provided some much needed levity. There were also times when his character was sympathetic and sweet so, in that sense, the movie was really nice. Hiddleston was a blank slate and I really didn't get anything from his character. He was my least favorite part of the movie. I liked the new twist on Kong in this movie.

Kickass action and a star-studded cast help this film shine in a big way. The characterization of Kong as well as the writing of many of the human characters also help it stand out. Borrows a bit from the early MCU formula on how to make a modern action flick out of existing and beloved IP, but not offensively so.

I knew it was going to be brainless, but it was weaker than I expected. Even if they avoided a classic chapter of the King Kong story, developed some characters, and made up new monsters, it didn't actually bring anything that special over all. People who wants to see monsters will see monsters I guess
