David Koechner is slowly building a respectable filmography. It's tough to see beyond his "Champ" buffoonery but when he dials it back even a little he's incredibly tolerable, teetering towards welcome. It's a Nic Cage sort of situation where most directors are probably too stupid or too scared to ask him to pull in the reigns a bit. Sometimes the more you let a Jim Carrey loose, the more you end up with a Burt Wonderstone.

A strange case of a movie not knowing what it wanted to be at all. While trying to maintain some mystery, the movie reveals all its better plot points in exchange for bad monsters, an inconsistant tone, and strange choices. Its not horrible, but Krampus has a lot of work to do before it could ever be a good movie.

A Christmas surprise - particularly since it's a PG-13 horror movie that was not screened for press, none of which are good signs - Krampus might not be a great movie, but it's successful at doing what it wants to, and if you chose to go see it, you'll likely not leave disappointed. It's a decent supernatural home invasion movie with a couple of fantastic (and trippy) sequences, some funny moments, a strong sense of atmosphere, and some wonderfully created villains. Krampus is good enough.

I enjoyed it. It isn't that scary by any means, and definitely leans on the comedic side more... but it was fun. Fun isn't usually a word I use to describe horror movies as the main goal is to terrify, but I just went along for the ride here and got into it. Krampus is a bad mother fucker, and I also love scenes like where he is introduced. Just a good time, ultimately.

I heard comparisons to ghostbusters and gremlins. I see what they meant with the script feeling it came right out of the 80's without all the 90's and beyond filler garbage. That said while I had some fun and there was certainly some memorable and compelling moments, it never fully gelled because it was too pg-13 and held back, but also wasn't memorably funny like the original movies mentioned. Sits in a bit of a no mans land that will make someone very happy, just not me.

A jolly good time that’s perfect to watch with the whole family around Christmas time! If your family lives with the title character… No, I thought it was pretty fun overall. I was hoping for something with at least likable characters, but the acting is good enough and the premise is just spooky and campy enough that it works for the most part. I loved the practical effects and even the ending. Strange character decisions aside, this was pretty decent and even creepy at times.

Strangely enjoyable and fun, if uneven in tone and pacing. It's clear I'm not the only one who got a "Gremlins" vibe from this, although it is certainly missing the charm of that film. I liked the cast, and the mix of CGI and odd puppetry was quite effective in its own way, although it ran afoul of a few modern horror tropes. The elements of horror and comedy don't quite gel, but this was entertaining. And the Krampus is an idea I'm happy to embrace more in film.

Viewed December 4, 2015. Not a particularly great horror film nor a particularly great comedy, but there's still something rather refreshing about its old school approach to this sort of thing. The way it elevates a typical/awful family gathering into catastrophe is a lot of fun, especially with the way it twists beloved Christmas traditions into weapons of destruction.

What an interesting little horror-comedy, that isn't particularly heavy on either, but does enough all-around to be entertaining, while at the same time actually being captivating with one hell of a sense of atmosphere. This feels like a 90's movie (right down to the poster). At the end of the day, 99% of Christmas movies boil down to the "treat each other better, now and all year" message, and so does this one, but this at least does so in a fun, attention-grabbing way. It has a GREAT ending!

Super fun horror movie that caught me by surprise. It's an effective PG-13 horror that could potentially scare some younger teens. Even my jaded 30 year old heart raced a time or two.Thematically there will be some parts that remind you of older movies, but this one does all those similarities just as well or better.

Pretty uncompromising for a Christmas pg-13 horror. Not exactly black Christmas, but no gremlins either. Somewhere in between satisfyingly cruel and appropriately restrained, but lots of fun either way. Nice costume design, especially for the krampus, and a welcome emphasis on practical effects.

The movie moves quickly between comedy and horror. Obnoxious relatives invade their serenity. There is a strange atmosphere of threatening weather & spooky apparitions. I disliked the granny character who chooses to speaks German most of the time. The tension builds and ever stranger events unfold. Culminating in them being overrun by kooky creatures such as evil ginger bread men. A strange mixture of surreal monsters & situations & awkward comedic interruptions. Not entirely satisfying.

Defies expectation. In a good way? Depends. It's a PG-13 horror film, which is a let-down, but what if it's not horror at all? It's WAY less comedic than expected, and what humor's in it is more dreary and sardonic than anything. It's almost more of a drama about the real bitterness, cynicism, guilt, and repressed sorrow surrounding Christmas across generations, with dark fantasy elements injected into it.

The introduction offers some good laughs and interesting if basic character clashes. But as soon as the horror element kicks in, there's a considerable dip in quality. "Krampus" proves slow, repetitive and flat. It's devoid of climaxes, suspense or a particularly imaginative plot. The lazy ending makes things even worse and the general absence of humour in the second part undermines the effort even more.

Fun if not strictly funny and wasn't really trying to be scary simply by using cliche jump scares. So it's not a terrifying horror film nor is it a total genre parody/spoof. There were great practical effects and the CGI was well toned. What's surprising is how Christmasy it is. I truly walk out filled with Christmas cheer which is really the most bizarre thing about it. I can't think of another horror film where I came away from it filled with a renewed wonder for Christmas. Highly Recommended.

Krampus, the Christmas oddity, skirts between comedy and horror committing to neither genre. The good: Collette, Scott, the campy blend of CGI and practical effects. The bad: an ending that is conceptionally intersting but poorly implemented, and a film that ultimately feels empty. Hindsight says I should have rewatched Gremlins; it has near-identical elements, but at least it delivers on the comedy.

Fun, festive movie that might end up joining Gremlins and Die Hard as my go to Christmas movies. It takes a while to get started, but the slow start really establishes the characters. Also the movie worked its pg-13 rating to its advantage by having excellent "implications", instead of out-right gore.

[SPOILERS] Fun, maybe, but derivative and nonsensical. The Krampus creature brings a harsh reminder of the true meaning of Christmas by turning consumer objects and/or secular symbols into lethal monsters, and forces a griping family to band together again, only to in the end simply cull them anyway as if they were defective units, before just taking it all back, undoing all his hard work at the behest of the character who had the least to learn from the whole affair.

Even for fans of writer/director Michael Dougherty's previous film Trick 'r Treat, this one's to be avoided. The first hour showed potential, but after that it really comes apart. Props to the costume department for creating some rather creepy stuff, but the action is just too long and over-the-top (and not particularly in a so-bad-it's-good way, more in a this-is-really-boring way) and the ending is also a bit of a mess.

Dougherty's 'Krampus' is comparable in style to the likes of 'Gremlins' and other pictures from the 80's; a camp and silly horror film that, while too predictable to frighten older viewers, will prove effective for younger ones while still providing entertainment for the former thanks to creative designs, and clever comedy and sound design.

What surprised me about it was that even before all the horror/fantasy stuff starts happening, it's actually a pretty decent family Christmas movie, too. The horror elements probably aren't as developed as they should be, but there's some cool ideas in there. I particularly enjoyed the practical effects - they were awesome. I wouldn't say I loved it overall, but there was enough good stuff there for some decent light entertainment.

You'd think the kills in this movie would roll out one by one with each new monster that's introduced, but for some reason they keep most of the characters alive only to get rid of them more or less in one fell swoop. The end result feels out of balance and not as satisfying as it could be, but it's still a fun holiday alternative.

An evil German Christmas monster and his minions show up to terrorize a family who have forgotten the true meaning of the holidays. There's some nice practical effects (and some bad ones), a decent body count (including some obnoxious and stupid children), and a few genuinely creepy moments. It's an OK flick with an admirable ending that manages to pull off a double twist without being dumb or predictable. If Christmas horror movies are your thing, you could do a lot worse.

Doesn't come close to reaching the heights attained by Gremlins because it's trying to actually be scary instead of overly cartoony. I wish they chose to go either comedy or horror instead of dabbling in both making it rather ineffective horror and not that funny. I still ended up enjoying it though.

Not quite as good as when I initially watched it in 2015, but I still had a fun time! Some of the most cool and creative production design I've ever seen in a Christmas film. None of the characters are particularly "nice", but I'm pretty sure that's the whole point. You're meant to feel bad for the main character and empathize with him. We all know what it's like to have family troubles, especially around the holidays. A pretty fun and fresh take on Christmas horror. I give 6 bulldogs out of 10.

A PG-13 horror film and it sort of Kramped its style. This movie had some highs and lows. I thought that some of the characters were really fun like the two mean twin girls. Then there was the main family that were a little boring. I love Adam Scott and Toni Collette, but they were kind of boring in this film. I liked the German Grandmother, she was pretty hardcore. The bad guys had some awesome looks to them, except for the Gingerbread Men...

Thoroughly decent festive shocker that balances horror and comedy impressively. Doesn't overplay the whole post-modern irony thing and has a distinctly 80's feel to it. Great audiovisual design and the story hangs together pretty well. Issues with pace & structure, doesn't always know how seriously to take itself and the ending could be a letdown for some.

Recalling the horror comedies of the 1980's--Gremlins is an obvious reference point--Krampus mixes yuletide cheer with dark mythology, creating an uneasy but entertaining hybrid that bears refreshingly little resemblance to most contemporary horror. Dougherty knows how to build suspense, direct actors and unleash bloody mayhem when the moment calls. Unfortunately he is let down by a humdrum script (which he co-wrote) that isn't nearly as creative as the visual elements, which are impressive.

Weak on the scares, watered down in the violence area, I suppose they wanted to make it more "family friendly" for whatever that means in a horror movie. The comedy is pitiful, and it's just not that good. The best part was the ending, which a hell of a lot of horror movies fail at. I'm guessing that if they didn't try to be all inclusive and just ramped up the gore and kills, this might have been a fun ride.

A strange case of folks not remembering this genre when it's resurrected after thirty-odd years. Remember Beetlejuice? Remember Gremlins? Remember those gateway horror films that had legitimately scary elements but wasn't overtly trying to terrify young kids? This film belongs on the shelf with those two and others of their ilk. The designs are fantastic, the atmosphere effective, and a solid story that fashioned this short-lived fad into something interesting.

I got through 45 minutes of this movie before I left. The rest of the night was great. I couldn't tell if they dumbed down the writing, or were just bad writers. I wanted all the characters to get killed. I'm assuming that didn't happen. If it did, I might re-watch just the ending at some point in the future when I am drunk enough.

So does all that mean you rush out to soak up the spiritual lessons Krampus hints at? Um. Not really. I'm quite sure the spiritual ideas buried in this unsettling movie can be unearthed more easily in ways that don't involve a goat demon gleefully dropping children into a fiery afterlife—you know, just for fun. It's kind of nice how the films works mostly like a home invasion film that uses European folklore to narrate a family's dissolution during the most beloved holiday -- only to convey some sort of Gremlins-esque creepy story full of puppets, masks, evil dolls, a monster clow and one anti-Santa that aims to destroy an entire family. Too bad Dougherty has to play the dream card to avoid that Mist-like finale, with everybody dying and the kid, the one who ripped a letter to Santa, being alone.

It occurred to me about 30 minutes in that this was a PG-13 horror film. Shit. There really isn't a fear of death in the film and there isn't any psychological horror, so what's the point? The jokes fall flat, the characters are boring, and there just isn't anything really scary. It's an overall relatively uninteresting film. Picks up a bit towards the end, but has a crummy ending.

Krampus isn't very funny and its attempt to keep a consistently tongue-in-cheek tone undercuts the effectiveness of much of its dark imagery. It's creative and there are some truly disturbing practical creature designs on display, but overly quick cuts and a comic score suffocate their horrific nature. And I really could have done without Ginger-bread minions. Good for one gag, but not a good enough gag to make up for their presence in the first place. The fake stop motion looks great though.

Does well jogging the memories of Christmas films gone by, particularly that 90's feel. But we're well past the 90's now, at least Krampus understands that much, adding a touch of spice for a PG film. Quite a unique blend of Austrian folklore & American sensibilities in terms of character and set design. The plot follows a traditional trajectory once you realise you're in holiday horror territory, the unique presentation keeping the audience curious at least.

There are too many characters and as a result half of them hardly have any development (not that they would've been likable anyways), resulting in us not caring when they are in danger. Not only this, but the short length of the movie doesn't allow for them to have their own individual deaths/disappearances, which makes the pacing feel too fast. Despite these shortcomings, it's a pretty entertaining niche horror film that's worthwhile for horror buffs.

I'll start with the bad: the plot is underdeveloped, the characters are pretty static and sometimes completely undeveloped, the CGI looks terrible, and the ending sucks. However, the puppets in this are fantastic and it does set a decent tone: campy and Christmas-cynical horror, which it mostly carries throughout. It just needed some more refinement and this might have been something akin to Gremlins, which is an obvious inspiration for the film.
