The action takes place shortly after the end of the Second World War in the Siberian hinterland, among Russians and Germans with damaged personal stories and a strange transformation: the victors seem to be crawling into the skins of the defeated, and vice versa. Ignat, is the embodiment of the larger-than-life image of the Soviet victorious warrior who, in fact, proves to be shell-shocked, sick and broken, although not completely destroyed. Trains become fetish for the heroes of the film. (imdb)

Good movie. One of the best I have seen the last two years. The irony may be difficult to catch for the western viewer, but it left me excited and I am keen to watch it again. Just forget the prejudices, lay back and try to discover it yourself.

Following in the great cinematic footsteps of Man With a Movie Camera, The General, and Runaway Train, this slightly deranged historical fantasy excels in one area specifically. Its mise-en-scene is spot-on, full of drab costumes and grim, grizzled characters, and puts you right in the centre of the iron, steam and smoke-filled loony bin of engine drivers. But the plot is nonsensical and the characters unsympathetic, and this overshadows any subtle nuance of the messages it tries to hammer home.

Entertaining, but there's nothing exceptionally good here. Also ending is terrible, made to please crowds in a Hollywood manner.

I won't even begin to list the things I didn't like about this movie - there were some good things in it too though. The art design is good. The russian humor I just don't get... a problem I've always had.

Russians argue and drive big ol' steam trains. Hilarity ensues.
