In this movie based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings, up-and-coming manager Russell Walker has all the hottest acts on the record label Krush Groove records, including Run-D.M.C., Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Kurtis Blow, while Rick (Rubin) produces their records. When Run-D.M.C. has a hit record and Russell doesn't have the money to press records, he borrows money from a street hustler. At the same time, Russell and his brother Run are both competing for the heart of R&B singer Sheila E. (imdb)

Better soundtrack than movie, but still interesting to glimpse some seminal rap stars in their early years.

The script is nothing special in this film. The reason to watch this movie is the music and the musical performances. This film is very much a time capsule from the hip hop period of the mid 1980's. Growing up with this music helped me enjoy this movie. There are early appearances from numerous acts including the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. Overall I would recommend this film for people who like 80's rap music.

This is the extremely fictionalized Def Jam origin story, with Blair Underwood playing Russell Simmons (who turns up as a club owner) and Rick Rubin playing Rick Rubin. As movies go, it's mildly entertaining but pretty rough with a sketchy plot and very few passable performances. That's okay though since it's a pretty invaluable mid-80s hip hop document.

Historical Hip-Hop artifact. Great when it's a mini-concert, crap when its storyline kicks in. Wish the LL & Beastie songs were full length!
