Ragnar and Frida married solely because she was pregnant. Later he would have a passionate side-affair with Rut. Rut's sexual feelings were highly neurotic because she had been sexually abused by her stepfather. When the chimney sweep came, she seduced him and afterward felt dirty and desperate. She found and seduced Ragnar. From the beginning she interspersed mean attacks. During the war he was drafted, but deserted. He and Rut hired a room by the chimney sweep.

Trashy story based on misguided passion. Sadly this soapy tragedy doesn't ignite much emotion, which is so weird with all the drama that occur. Best know for being one of the movies written but not directed by Ingmar Bergman. The actual directing is handled by veteran Gustaf Molander, who is unable to twist the script to best effect, though, that's probable more down to Bergman's writing being all over the place with this one. It was still one of those movies which you can't take your eyes off.
