"Aesthetically, emotionally, and intellectually crude, Koji Wakamatsu's brutally effective Caterpillar finds the director making obvious points about Japanese nationalism/militarism and less obvious ones about the sexual dynamic of marriage." - Andrew Schenker

An attempt to symbolically connect the operation of social power via nationalist ideology to the operation of domestic power via marital ideology (let's say). The psychosexual melodrama plays out in a way that seems rudimentary and repetitive, but the hammer blow that comes when the ultimate consequences of all this are shown is undeniably affecting. The stark and unadorned digital cinematography will undoubtedly offend the aesthetic sensibilities of audiences looking for cinematic artistry.

The best anti-war movie I have ever seen. Not for the faint-hearted.

The anti-war sentiments a given, I'm rather bugged by the film's cynical treatment of its protagonists (and its audience too - as if we didn't know about propaganda). To create the caterpillar, the most pathetic image of a war hero imaginable, suggest that he deserves his fate, and watch him suffer for ninety minutes is not exactly my idea of humanist filmmaking.

While I'm glad someone decided to tackle transferring the brilliant short story into a film, the end-result is wholly disappointing. It's as if someone made a movie out of Poe's The Raven, but instead of making it about a dude and a raven, they introduced an intricate sub-plot about the Iraq War and PTSD. In both cases, the war angle is completely unnecessary and is frankly insulting to the original work. Still there's enough in this film that's genuine to the original & worth a look.

Maybe a lesser version of "Antichrist," an attempt to reduce human nature and in some ways male-female relations down to the elemental. The ostensible anti-war dealio is rather... unconvincing.
