L'Appât

I don't enjoy many French films from this period (kind of post cinema du look). I find the aggression towards avant-gardist and intellectual concerns too concerted. It's like French people trying to avoid their stigma, which is fair enough, but then you have a bunch of movies by intellectuals about dullard wannabe gangsters with speech impediments.

Marie Gillian's eye-popping looks are tantalizingly flaunted throughout "The Bait", as its title entirely merits, but even more impressive is her acting prowess. She is 100% pitch perfect as the shockingly naive and yet terrifyingly unscrupulous young Nathalie. It's a superbly written character study, fast-moving and rich, and Tavernier's set and wardrobe designers display meticulous attention to color and texture (favoring dark warm hues). It's the best I've seen by him.
