Another of the Lumiere Brothers' one-shot films, this time showing a steam train arriving at a station and moving towards the camera It has passed into film folklore for the incident that occurred at its world premiere, when the audience, unfamiliar with the cinema thought the train was really coming right at them, and panicked! Sometimes I like to think about the honest, provincial folks back in 1895 who, unfamiliar with film as a medium, saw an enormous train bearing down on them and with eyes as wide as saucers and mouths shaped like tiny hamburgers, dove screaming into the aisles to avoid meeting their demise. And then I laugh a deep, hearty, stupid laugh, wipe the drool from my chin, and feel like an asshole.

Apparently untrue that it was shown at the Lumière brothers' first public screening on 28 December 1895 (not being shown until 1896), and apparently unclear what was the true audience reaction. Be that as it may, it seems clear that the audience did react with astonishment, and that what this serves to show is that to watch a film is to engage in a practice that must be learned. The point being: this may well be a practice that, 120 years later, is well on the way to being unlearned.

How do you rate something like this? Its impossible really. It's a train, a cinematically important train, but still just a train! There's not much else to say!

If any film manages to beautifully succeed in capturing the feeling of boarding or departing a train, this film is it.

Historically important. For some reason I really enjoyed seeing the clothes people were wearing.. Today this is only useful for understanding the history of film though, and doesn't really have entertainment value. It's hard to rate because of this, so the score is pretty arbitrary.

Despite the lack of dogs in the crowd, this Lumière actuality short makes up for it with an old timey choo-choo train. Interesting as another little film history time capsule of late 19th century France, but more interesting is the mystery of; what's in that time-traveler's picnic basket? For some reason I like to think it's a Mogwai. Why? Uhh...I don't know, maybe because my brain craves narrative, and it's just left to make up stories for all these random people lost to the sands of time.

Nothing more than an establishing shot nowadays, but historically significant. At the very least it serves as an artifact, showcasing the fashions of the time.

Even thinking this could be a simple Lumiere short, important historically but with no artistic or entertaining value, one of those I would just put a simple medium 50 to show I watched it, the case is different now. All the myth about people scared for the arrival train is good enough to make it a bit different for any other Lumiere short. People was no delighted or surprised, they were excited and frightened, a new undiscovered power of the invention.

That story about the world premiere is interesting, and this deserves credit for it's infuence. It's still just a shot of a train arriving at a train station and even though I watched it 4 times I didn't see anything special about the shot.

You can't really rate a short like this. It's a test, a flash of a moment, an everyday thing, an angle and movement. Besides trains being impressive, and capturing them even moreso.

It's hard to give a fair ranking to this film seeing as it's less than a minute in length and literally a single shot of a train. So the rating is largely one of historical significance. It introduces the idea of framing, I guess, showcasing different sorts of establishing shots, and also benefits from being actual footage from the 19th century - it's not staged, as such, so for me it's a kick to see normal people hanging around 100+ years in the past.
