More pretension than honesty. An uninteresting amble through convoluted, symbolically charged imagery with something of a disdain for the viewer. It isn't aesthetically appealing either. Pointless but so inoffensive that I cannot rate it below the middle-of-the-road, forgettable average.

In this short, Varda take some candid street scenes, mixes in a few staged scenes, and organizes the images to a selection of brief Kurt Weill-influenced songs. It's less interesting than it sounds. The best part is right in the beginning, where we see Varda's own very pregnant bare stomach and then cut to a giant pumpkin being sliced open. The rest of it is rather unengaging, and feels kind of like something Maya Deren might do if she didn't have a huge stick up her ass.

strange meditation on different aspects of life, from love to old age to anxiety, without an awful lot of effort going into making much sense. pretty neat.

A beautiful, largely incomprehensible artifice.

I missed the beginning, but my partial impression was that this short is certified KINO.

This neighborhood no longer exists as captured here. These stream-of-consciousness ideas are fleeting. The procession of faces are dead. Agnes Varda is dead. Cinema preserves them. I wish this were twice as long.

This playful, avant-garde short is reminiscent of the "city symphony" films of the 20's ... kind of a neighborhood symphony ... but with a more personal touch. It was shot while Varda was pregnant with her first child, and you can feel this impacting some of the images that interest her.

Perhaps the greatest photographer of all time in the start of her career, so no surprise we get such a vivid, striking collection of her faces and places cinema -- walking, sleeping, drinking, love making, staring, looking, posing, working, being romantic, being anxious and on pain, eating flowers, remembering those who are absent.
