The pivotal scene kinda shows the power of implication; it’s disturbing to depict in film, but the sequence of events are tame compared to real life, which presents the risk of trivialising, the absolute opposite of what was intended. Overall it’s an excellent aesthetic object, and really valuable as a female perspective on the subject (though Noé certainly looms large), even if it’s all a bit too much misery porn to truly blow me away.

Neither of Hadzihalilovic's two shorts come close to the brilliance and mystery of Innocence. But this one is pretty good. The film is a slow boil of quiet misery and despair, culminating in a harrowing ending that comes full circle. Noe serves as cinematographer, and he indulges in one of his more annoying habits: big block letter intertitles overlapped with a thudding sound effect. But the performances are good and it manages to deal with a sensitive subject in a non-sledgehammer manner.
