La Cérémonie (1995)
Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for the upper-class family Lelievre, hides her illiteracy under the cloak of a perfect household and obedience. She finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers. Things start to escalate as the Lelievres find out that Sophie can't read and has brought Jeanne into their house against their wish. (imdb)

Excellent script and flawless acting. The master Chabrol delivers a brilliant direction in this suspenseful drama with an increasing feeling of danger and tension.

Truly awesome psychological thriller that steadily builds up tension, uneasy and unsure suspicion, a feeling of dread but nothing specifically predictable. Huppert and Bonnaire's performances are bone-chillingly creepy. With its undertones of social tension, this is almost like the thriller that Michael Haneke always tries to make and never quite succeeds. Chabrol (and Ruth Rendell) pass with flying colors.

An absolutely brutal final sequence almost makes you forgot how smartly crafted this whole thing was. Class interplay done without making you annoyed. It’s all the little things adding up. It’s how much big deals are made of the tiniest favours. The bourgeois are idiots watching opera on TV instead of going in person
