A prostitute is murdered, and the day of the incident is seen through the eyes of a series of potential suspects/witnesses. The handiest comparison would be Rashomon, but it's not really that similar. I felt more of a Godard influence, the story picking up interesting (often delightful) little fragments of unrelated events... with the murder itself a secondary matter until the end. It's a little dull in parts, but lyrical in others, and the unusualness of it was appealing.

Not really about the conclusion (I stopped caring about the murder after the first story). It's the little moments that connect each story together, the state of each of these individual lives, & a certain playful neorealist tone that makes it all seem worthwhile. The soldier's part was my personal favorite. Very nice debut from Bertolucci.

There are plenty of small flaws (The camera moves far too often, the ending feels way too drawn out), but this is arguably Bertolucci's greatest work. His later works would be overrun with prentention and a style-over-substance mentality, but this film balances both perfectly.

A rather impressive debut for what it is, especially considering Bertolucci was all of twenty-two when he made it. Ultimately it's far stronger as a work of pure mood and style than it is on character or story, but then again when has that not been the case with him? And if nothing else it's bears out my opinion that Bertolucci is probably the most preternaturally gifted visual stylist of post-Neo Realist Italian cinema, excluding possibly Antonioni (who took a lot longer to find his voice).

Clumsy at times, and some of the actors are especially amateurish. The ending bits are handled wonderfully, though.

A morte estreava há 60 anos no Festival de Veneza. É mesmo impressivo que isso tenha sido feito por um guri de 21 anos que já prenuncia a ótima carreira que teria. BlurayRip VXT.
