A crafty exploration of unequal relationships that builds suspense around sexual secrets. Chabrol uses this device incredibly well, refusing to shy away from the harsh results for his central characters, while at the same time deftly altering our perceptions of characters throughout the film.

Gabrielle's weather-girl job is ironic: In her good-natured naivety, she persistently fails to predict Charles' noncommittal exploitation of her and Paul's violence-prone jealousy. In all fairness, the pattern is slow to emerge. It's all twists and surprises, only making perfect psychological sense in retrospect. It's a beautifully written, performed and shot thrill-ride ending in an ingenious epilogue. Funny it's reminiscent of Woody Allen thrillers, since they in turn are inspired by Chabrol.

Reminded me a lot of Match Point, but I much prefer Allen's sombre tone over Chabrol's more satirical, conflicted one. I don't think it entirely succeeds as either a comedy or a thriller. It's not particularly intense, and I didn't really find this as darkly funny as it seems to think it is. Still, Chabrol is definitely a master filmmaker, and the cast is great at breathing life into these blandish, bourgeois characters.

Once again Chabrol asks his audience for a lot of faith, patience and tolerance, in this underwhelmingly banal tale of privileged people screwing up each others' lives.

If you don't understand the bdsm references or if you don't think through the character's actions in context of D/s relationships then a lot of what happens doesn't make much sense, and even if you do know about D/s then the film still seems silly and - in how it shies away from exploring its most interesting elements - rather boring. It doesn't help that the film looks tacky.

good. the bdsm angle someone posted on imdb is interesting, and quite obvious in retrospect. in general the film is well-made and acted, but it did feel a little slight.

A masterpiece of Chabrol's later period, this study of a passionate and honest young woman making her way through a minefield of puritanism, perversion and the merciless imperatives of class is restrained and compelling. As is customary with Chabrol, all this leads to violence, but the violence is a natural extension of character and circumstances, never an excuse for melodrama. Sagnier's performance is subtle and haunting, and Berleand strikes the right note as the aging novelist.

Maybe I don't get it. But I blame Chabrol. Very obvious mary sue bullshit here. To me, there are 3 (4 if you count remy) new wavers. I don't care for Chabrol much at all.
