Intended, in part, as an implicit critique of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement, this is the perfect antithesis of overly-twee whimsical cinema while at the same time (perhaps consequentially) coming off as something like what Wes Anderson might have been as a more committed, brave, and radical filmmaker. Or one could just say that it's sort of like what Bresson might have done with The Thin Red Line (but actually fun!). Bonus points for pop-sike favorite "Gospel Lane".

"Gender and genre are continuously bent in La France, Serge Bozon's uniquely weird and often starkly beautiful experiment." - Fernando F. Croce

Not as gloomy like other typical war-time films. The soldiers looked like common folks out on a camping trip. It's especially funny when they break out into songs, rather unexpectedly at times.
