Sure it gets a bit silly toward the end, and like every Garrel film it does start to drag a bit, but otherwise this film contains large chunks of the purest, best distillation of this filmmaker's particular magic that i have seen. If the entire film could have maintained the quality of the first forty or so minutes (plus large parts of the second half), it could have probably been one of the greatest movies ever.

i mean it wasn't one of the WORST movies i've seen... i just wish the characters weren't so shallow and underdeveloped.

One of the most heart-breaking films I've ever watched. I couldn't really decide whom I should sympathize the most while watching this film. Every single character is a tragic figure in their own way, following their own story: François, Carole and Ève. The direction is admirable, with elements that for some reason brought Truffaut's films to my mind. We were used to admire Louis Garrel's talent in every film he was participating but I have to admit that father Garrel left me speechless as well.

Pretentious and inane piece of navel gazing may well have been the film the SOUTH PARK boys had in mind when they were thinking of "gay cowboys eating pudding" - detached, passionless performances from an ill-matched Garrel and Smet put it on rough footing from the start, before Garrel's pompous screenplay (and an irritatingly intrusive, violin-heavy score) really do the film in. Black & white cinematography at least makes it a sleek and well-photographed bore.
