Entirely shot using a robotized camera set on the top of a mountain in the Canadian wilderness - in winter. The camera was mounted on a mechanical arm that could move in any direction (even upside down). Using instructions recorded on magnetic tape, the filmakers could control the arm's movement, creating short "routines" that had do be checked and programmed daily. During the entire movie the only sound heard are mechanical blips and electronic noises synchronized with the camera movement.

A trying film, and the opening half hour may be the worst part. Not that the rest is much better, but landscapes and sky are a bit more interesting than the ground. I like this kind of structuralist experiment in theory, but the arbitrariness of the shots and the 3 hour run time go way beyond what I'm willing to endure.

I support experimental film. Cinema can do a lot more than just straightforward storytelling. I like Stan Brakhage. But Brakhage had the sense not to make his work THREE HOURS LONG. The idea behind the film is mildly interesting, and there were even brief moments when I found myself hypnotized and intrigued. But let's not kid ourselves, it's mostly a bunch of conceptual wankery. There's little difference between seeing the film and simply reading about it.

This is one of those critically acclaimed movies where I feel like I'm being pranked. It's an experimental film, but I can safely say that the experiment failed for me and is nothing more than a waste of perfectly good film, and three hours of it. Maybe this works better if it's over a half hour or 45 minutes (maybe not). It certainly would have been more tolerable. I don't mind experimental stuff like this existing; I just don't get why people like it.
