La belle époque

This is certainly a creative and fascinating concept for a film, but with little done to explore it properly -- despite the fun that comes with this idea, it ends up just being another noodling European film about romance between a man and a much younger women.

For whatever reason, I find French feel-good movies much more appealing than any other.

A very interesting idea indeed and a well executed too. Story is excellent and takes an interesting approach at old couple's romance - and I mean the whole journey, from fragile foundation of decades of various self and to-other abuses to the whole journey of discovering what you loved about someone when you were younger. I really liked the idea, not with all the theater of course, as one can always try to remember why we fell in love - we tend to ignore these things during longer time frames.

Got an hour in and couldn't finish. The constant flipping from one angle to the next felt frantic and gave me anxiety. Every character is either angry or pathetic. This needed to mellow out and be a fantasy or sci-fi for it to work.

Doesn't always work, but it's a cute high-concept mainstream romantic movie, if that's a thing...

la belle epoque dials the frenchness to an eleven, basically hitting all the right spots on its nostalgia binge. auteil is very good, doria tillier is "so beautiful" and canet is his usual self, i guess. "la belle epoque" is, all in all, a by the numbers french romantic comedy, but the thing is those french bastards do these movies really well.

La belle époque is also an era in 20th century before the World War I.

I think I was expecting a bit more surrealism or fantasy with La Belle Époque, but the film remains solid a dramedy with a mostly well-executed concept. The production aspects of the fantasies are interesting but not indulged; instead the film focuses on the messiness of relationships. Auteuil is good, but it's Tillier who steals her scenes. The ending is a little too conventional, and the meta-nature of the plot doesn't really have anything to say about manipulating the lives of others.

It was a lovely/imaginative/wholesome movie, although I fell asleep for a short time around the midway (because the material felt somewhat repetitive around that time). It is one of those rare movies that do not waste an interesting premise with a gradually disappointing plot. I also think that it was the most beautiful/well-made romance film on old couples among those I've seen so far.

Interesting premise and overall it's well made. I just think the underlying romance story was a bit weak, which made it a whole lot less impactful for me. It also felt a bit mainstream and slightly predictable. But despite these shortcomings, it was still moderately entertaining.

This was a lovely movie, very romantic about older people and love.
