La fille du 14 juillet

A deeply silly and playfully deep Situationist slapstick comedy as only an affiliate of the 'La Lettre du Cinéma' crowd could have dreamed up, and could even almost pass for a manifesto of sorts for what seems to be their overarching sensibility. With it's self-consciously lowbrow humor and zany anti-naturalism it comes as close to the spirit of their beloved Luc Moullet as anything else in French cinema that i've seen. American so-called independent cinema could sure use some of it's spirit.
