My first Garrel is a striking drama about love, infidelity and the subtle things of every relationship, specially when the people involved are struggling actors. Louis loves his second wife, but still betrays her and he has to chance to. It starts with the best shot of the year -- the daughter watching their parents going different ways through the door lock -- and ends with a powerful ellipse -- after trying to shoot himself, he finds peace with his sister and daughter. Beautiful.

At a mere 75 minutes, it would be very easy for me to call this "too minor for it's own good", and i might even be correct (this score may very well change upon further reflection), but at the same time this brevity prevents the film from dragging the way so many Garrel films tend to do (especially seeing as how he's more or less remade the same film for most of career), and yet at the same time Joe Swanberg could only dream of creating scenes that resonate with me the way this does.

A knowing, wise film about the ways that relationships can turn in subtle ways, unbeknownst to everyone involved. The titular theme plays out only in the subtlest of ways, (e.g. as Claudia off-handedly asks Louis about a female co-star). Garrel allows moments like these to pass almost unnoticed, which drives us to think carefully about the desperate relational need that each of the principles has. An atmosphere of loss (from the opening scene) contributes well to a sense of what's at stake.
