Here you get a mix of comedy as the brute is trying to turn into a gentleman without knowing what that is and you get the hard gangster stuff George Bancroft was known for after starring in a few acclaimed Josef von Sternberg movies. This however is a early talkie and there are plenty of awkward dialogue and uneven pacing to everything. It takes a while before it gets going, but the climax is done well and Bancroft gets to show he's good at playing with kids for a more softer side of him.
