Hysterical bodice ripper can't escape its trashy melodramatic roots, but it's hard not to like such an entertaining, often extremely funny film, unafraid to probe a heart of darkness. Pugh's magnificent cauldron of seething passions matched by Hilton and Jarvis' less interesting, but still weighty roles; ditto Ackie's almost wordless performance. While resemblance to Shakespeare is fleeting, it is interesting how elements of his play are used and subverted here (especially relating to gender).

A well-made, but tremendously dark movie that I never want to see again.

Ok, sure 19th century England (or Russia, where the original novella comes from) was unjust, patriarchal, yadda yadda, but what is depicted in this film pushes all of it to the limit. The coldness and evilness of all characters is so extreme that the whole thing is completely unconvincing. Shakespeare understood human nature, but the scriptwriter doesn't. To watch this was unpleasant from the first to the last minute.

A movie which doesn't let you feel the way you want to feel about it. The movie goes into some very deep cracks of human psyche and its disposition to voilence to attain power. What's interesting is Lady Macbeth traps you in this haunting period peice and honestly you don't feel like leaving. Florence Pugh is excellent and the cinematography is distant but earnest in capturing the emotions underneath. Definitely a must watch.

Not as cynical as expected, but Oldroyd is unable to make it interesting by relying too much on plot twists and on a Haneke-esque approach to violence. Not completely boring because Florence Pugh manages to elevate the material.

Hypothetical question: If the only life you can see before you is a joyless life of unending degradation, what would you do? Would you accept it as God's will and pray for things to get better, or would you fight back against your fate? Me, I would fight back. I am not the meek, to wait to inherit the earth. I am a fighter. In the context of the film, that would make me an evil bitch, a Lady MacBeth. So be it. Yep, this is a dark morose film, betraying its origins as a Russian novel!

Story is written unskillfully, most of the stuff going on in this movie happens for no reason and if there is reason, it is created promptly. As a result, movie does not flow good and you see it could be better. Acting was very good I think.

Midsommar 2: The remushrooming. Pugh really sells this part; a woman who starts off with our sympathies and then spends the last half of the movie daring us to not abandon them. When there's no way out, where do you dig? Lay on, Macduff.

The story of a woman who does what she needs to get what she wants. The performance by Pugh of a woman possessed by greed, lust etc. is impressive, in particular her portrayal of sexual desire and conquest.

A period drama that, unlike most others, feels bleak instead of sumptuous, and does not ask us to side with any character.

Even as a man, I find the plot point "girl falls in love with her rapist" to be offensively stupid. This and the rest of the story ("she wants to be with him no matter what and kills everyone who stands in their way") barely seems worthy of featuring in a midnight B-movie, but the dark and self-serious treatment it gets in Lady Macbeth is hilarious (or it would be, if it wasn't so tedious).

Despite a stellar performance from Pugh, Lady Macbeth quickly becomes a chore to watch. There is something viscerally unappealing about a discontented character almost immediately turning to murder to fulfil petty desires. It being a period piece set in a bleak misrepresentation of North East England doesn't help either. Lady Macbeth (from the play) has always been manipulative and power-hungry, and to an extent this is brought over, but it's still not fun (or even compelling) to behold.

(Son anda vicdana geliyor adam) Kötü karakter filmlerinden biri.

I don't usually like films that go as far as this one on the experience of violence. But Oldroyd is very effective in constructing the violence as something of the dynamics of that household.

For the love of Christ, don't watch this because your tone-deaf streaming service copywriter put this in a ROMANCE category. But if you're into a femme fatale revenge story set in Victorian England, here you go.
