Very interesting to see a woman lead character in a film like this, and she blew me away. In all honesty Lady Vengeance did nothing for me for about the first hour, but when the parents confront the killer, and the scenes that ensue and come before it are job droppingly fantastic and at the same time horrifying. A smart picture that looks beautiful as well. Inferior to Oldboy, but definitely worthy.

I was let down by Chan-wook Park's Oldboy, but this one more than makes up for it. It's SO much better that I can't understand why it's Oldboy that gets all the hype. The film is visually delectable, with oodles of striking images and clever effects. The story is rich and multi-faceted, without needing to resort to convoluted plot twists or cheap thrills. It's funny, moving, tense, engaging and often heartbreakingly beautiful.

Geum-ja Lee is one of the finest female charactors ever brought to the silver screen. For me this is Chan-wook Park's direction at its most fluent and intricate, yet somehow this film never loses its aura of menace and loonacy! Powerful, savage, beautiful and funny, Lady Vengeance is my favourite of the Vengeance Trilogy. Movies simply don't get much cooler than this.

It's just a near-perfect movie. It doesn't use any gimmicks or twists to keep our attention, but rather uses compelling directing, writing, and storytelling. I don't really see why Park decided to screw around with the time segments, but other than that, this is one of the best "revenge" tales ever made, if not THE best revenge tale ever made.

It only won my attention in its last 45 minutes or so, when the Lady gets the dead kids' families together to watch vids of their children and then let them claim revenge. The 1st hour works as a bloated and comic post-Kill Bill prison film, while the 2nd finally accepts the Gospel melodrama tone ironically suggested before, bringing into the scenes ultraviolence and a story of (lost) motherhood. In the end, beauty arrives: snow as a symbol of purity from a dirty woman to an innocent kid.

Difficult film to digest because at times the viewer is hit with so many emotions at once that it takes awhile to absorb what you are experiencing. Lady Vengeance is about redemption, failure, and the dissatisfaction of vengeance. There is no dumbed down Hollywood moment where a smug heroine walks off into the sunset in glory there is only sadness at life. The last 30 minutes of the film are simply stunning and a reflection of what vengeance really does to individuals.

A contender for my favorite film of the decade. It's bold, edgy, funny, unpredictable, thought provoking and best of all, moving. The other entries in the vengeance trilogy are top quality too, but I love the dark neofeminist tones running through this the most. Just be prepared for the sharp 180 degree turn it takes halfway through.

Generally the least-liked of the Revenge Trilogy. I still enjoyed this more than Oldboy, personally. If Oldboy represented the action and mechanics of revenge, and Mr. Vengeance represented the human side of it, Lady Vengeance does a perfect job with the poetic and aesthetic aspects. Perhaps I'm a sucker for a pretty picture, but Lady Vengeance really got me there.

Personally, it's my favorite of the Park Chan-wook Vengeance trilogy. It doesn't have the relentlessly drab, misanthropic outlook that Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance has, nor the weird-out final third that Oldboy is. It is definitely still emotional and stylish. A superb film that rounds out the three beautifully.

"Chinjeolhan geumjassi" has Park's idiosyncratic wit, his trademark visual panache and, during the final scenes, a snowy, melancholic resonance. Still, the labyrinthine structure, the self-absorbed weirdness and the largely vapid characters prevent me from loving the film. I appreciate the craft, the uniqueness, the few moments with an emotional ring, but overall this left me kinda disoriented.

The trilogy ends with a gut wrenching punch in the stomach. And I loved it. Guem-Ja is one of the best characters you'll ever see, interesting, badass, sexy. The cinematography and direction are both excellent, it's a great film to look at. I think we all would have this type of fantasy if someone hurt someone we cared about but to see it on screen was shocking to say the least. Made me think and question things which I sadly can't say about most of the crap I watch.

Very elegant movie. Story is simple, but the narrative structure makes it confusing, because the plot constantly jumps through time and space. Cinematography is top notch, the film is pleasure to look at. Park Chan-wook got really confident with this film, maybe even too confident. Sometimes it balances on the line of being pretentious. Unforgettable, powerful movie with a few flaws.

Compared to the harsh neo-realism of the first film, or the stylish nouvelle vague brutality of the second, this one is fairly surreal and magical. There's plenty of violence and cringe, bad actions do still have tragic consequences, but there's much more positivity and gentleness. Not that those other films lacked those qualities, but this one actively pursues them. All told, each entry in the vengeance trilogy is as good as the next and last and first. A great series.

A change in tone from the earlier installments of Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy. It felt more experimental, unconventional and visually creative, though I found it a bit less engaging at times than the earlier two. The craft isn't as strong as The Handmaiden or Decision to Leave, but this feels like maybe the starting point of Park's journey towards his later super polished films.

A little better than Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, but I had similar feelings about this to that film. It's certainly less dull, and is often extremely beautiful with profound feeling scenes, but I found the narrative needlessly complex at times, jumping back and forth through time in a way that is more confusing than anything and just unnecessary. I think I might have liked it much more without this. Ending with the parents really packs a punch, though. Oldboy is the best of this trilogy.

The story immediately gets off on the wrong foot and never sets itself right again. Through an extremely convoluted set of circumstances, the protagonist is imprisoned. Then she befriends the inmates, who each help her once she gets outside. And then, instead of getting vengeance, she helps the families of other victims get vengeance. I'm not sure what the point is, precisely. Sometimes its beautiful, but its mostly confusing. The protag felt like a tour guide more than a main character...

Things I loved: Geum-Ja, the cinematography, and the scenes with the family members. But most of the set up is underwhelming because the narrative is too fractured. I think maybe it'd be better on a second viewing, where I understand who the characters are and what's going on overall. But I'm left wishing they'd spent more time with the family members and their decision. That was one of the most interesting dynamics you could imagine, and the scene didn't last long enough.

Lady Vengeance is one of my favorite movies when it comes to sheer style. The colors, imagery, stunning shots, transition and other editing effects, and a magnificent score combine to make this movie well worth watching on its own. Unfortunately, the narrative is an absolute mess. Enough is never explained, making it difficult to understand or care about what's going on, and to add to that many scenes are nonlinear at complete random. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is a very good film. You don't expect anything different at this point, do you? Park Chan-wook has a fascination with the concept of revenge, and over the course of three great films, has explored it to a great extent. I think everyone has a different opinion of how the trilogy should be ranked, although all three are superb. Personally, I found this to be the least successful, perhaps because I found the non-linear story handled poorly early on, or because it had a clear-cut villain, unlike the earlier films. Nevertheless, this has several haunting and powerful scenes, and is beautifully shot. Thematically it would make for an incredible double feature with M.

This has a human element that was lacking in Oldboy, and many other revenge fantasies. That's where this sets itself apart; it isn't a fantasy because it really doesn't glorify the nature of vengeance. The best in Park's Vengeance trilogy (even if Oldboy is very good). It has neither the absurdity of Oldboy nor the unbearably drab misanthropy of Mr Vengeance, and instead is an incredibly sleek, stylish, beautifully made film that manages to have a surprisingly rich, powerful emotional core as well as the most thourough and interesting look at vengeance of the trilogy. Vengeance as redemption, redemption as loss of innocence, loss of innocence as an attempt to start anew.

Obviously similar to but much superior to Oldboy. I find the morality a bit all over the place. Yes, revenge ain't easy, I get that. What I don't fully understand is how the movie judges its characters. Is it Christian? Is it amoral? Is it pitiful and self-serving? Manic editing, great soundtrack, some truly bizarre imagery and an absurdly dark sense of humour. It all adds up to a great film. I thought it was starting to sag a little going into the final third - it veers precariously close to torture-porn at one point - but the emotional payoff at the end makes it more than worthwhile. A marvel - Park eschews the harsh minimalism of his earlier work for a full-on ornate aesthetic, and it works magnificently. It's a beautiful piece of work that helpfully comes packaged with the best story of the Vengeance trilogy - with Lee Yeong-ae's perfect lead performance as the canny and manipulative Geum-ja, Park's tale of a series of hollow revenges with only the sparsest of short-term gains is smart, dark and told with the skill of a master.

While the film is wonderfully complex and nuanced in its exploration of conventional understandings of femininity (you could write dissertations on this film), it ultimately just lacks that engaging quality of the predecessors. Park focuses too much on elegance and grace that he neglects the emotional fervor that made his previous films so stirring.

I think the plot would have been better delivered in a more chronological fashion, but this is still a hugely intense film with the best cinematography in the vengeance trilogy.

I loved Oldboy, but this movie is way too self-consciously weird. About a third of the scenes made no sense and seemed pointless. Also, the "vengeance" climax had serious dramatic potential, but it wasn't explored at all - it was just used as an excuse for borderline pornographic violence.

Starts well, but goes further and further downhill as it progresses. Despite the obvious skill with which it has been crafted, the film passes through various phases which are, in turn, unpleasant, ludicrous, and, finally, very tedious. It is strange that a director who appears to be so interested in narrative also seems to have such trouble bringing his movies to a satisfying conclusion. Perhaps the movie's hyper-realist artificiality is at increasing odds with its ever-mounting earnestness.

Again a strong female lead actor, great effects, breathtaking score and positively unconvetional directing. There is a lot of powerful scenes (though some lame ones as well) and mainly the story is okay, but the end is pretty much fall down, because it lasts way too long and it breaks othewise more or less accurate pacing.

Man what brutal film this one is, though I certainly expected it from Chan-Wook. I'm pretty sure, being a father myself, that if I was in a similar situation and was given the chance those parents were I'd make damn sure to make shit last.

Everyone I've talked to is so disappointed by this one in relation to its predecessors, but I can't figure out why. I find it just as engaging and beautiful as all of this guy's movies.

Easier to follow than "Oldboy". Entertaining, although the ending could have been trimmed.

my least favorite of the three, but still a good movie. it really felt like a two hour setup for one scene. that was the only issue.

I knew what I was getting into, but I still wasn't prepared. Wow. The last half of the movie takes a huge turn that you won't be ready for no matter how hard you try.
