A little piece of trivia: during filming, part of the set collapsed on Bob Balaban, trapping him underneath. When called over to help, M. Night Shyamalan proceeded to urinate in Balaban's mouth, while screaming "how's THAT for a twist ending, bitch!" over and over. It is included on the DVD's blooper reel.

Not exactly terrible, but sloppily written, poorly edited, and astonishingly self-indulgent. Shyamalan giving himself the role of a world-changing writer (and martyr!) while villainizing a film critic is the epitome of pretentiousness. A misfire you can easily skip.

"...written, directed and produced by M.Shyamalan", ie crap, crap and crap. At last Shyamalan has to write his own script instead of stealing/using others and he makes a lousy movie. After the village his 'deus ex machina' trick is worn out and it finally shows. Shyamalan, contrary to what u think, u r NOT a good director.

Audiences refuse to give Shyamalan a chance after the disappointment that was "The Village" and now his little bedtime story here. I thought his offering here was fresh, interesting, and well-made. I applaud one of cinema's most risky filmmakers. Even when audiences and studios unjustly turn their backs, he makes what he wants.

Looks like Shyamalan jumped the shark, and by shark I mean the WATER NYPMH. This movie is abso-fuck-lutely ridiculous. It's a hideously awful mess and probably fails more completely at establishing the "mythology" of its world than any other studio-financed film I've ever seen.

OK I guess I'll be the minority here but honestly I don't see why everyone thinks this movie is God awful terrible. The critic in the film hilariously breaks the 4th wall multiple times. Giamatti is quite good. Shyamalan is decent enough. Admittedly this isn't Shyamalan's best work but in my opinion it's by no means bad, that's reserved for The Happening. It's a fun imagination story.

Nothing about this film works! The plot is full of holes and ultimately goes nowhere. The script is cumbersome and crude, and most of the support performances are sloppy at best. Furthermore Shyamalan's egotistical nature seems to creep out of every pour of this film. Yet, I like this movie. It's unusually compelling and I like the weird atmosphere it creates. Furthermore Paul Giamatti is sensational. I can't help being fond of this film, in spite of, & because of its flaws. The idea was right!

Shyamalan's riskiest and strangest venture most clearly shows his intention to invent some new kind of cinematic fable. The film will inevitably come across to many as sanctimonious and self-indulgent, despite being perhaps his only effort to possess something resembling a sense of humour. Appreciation of the movie depends on the viewer's willingness to go along with the very bizarre premise. This viewer found interest could not be sustained for the duration, as events became increasingly trite.

It works on the level of a pure fairy tale but seems to be have been made overly complicated for no other reason than for the hell of it.

"Lady in the Water" is a remarkably well-intentioned film. From its stellarly conceived, minimalist prologue, there's an immediate feeling of childhood wonder. It has a fantastic lead in Giamatti's stuttering superintendent, and a delightful supporting cast. However, Shyamalan's bedtime story falters by revelling in a sort of self-imposed importance, believing itself to be far more philosophical and complex than it truly is. A genuine film, but a confused one.

Not terrible, just very average. For very thing that kind of works, there's something else that doesn't work at all. Giamati is very good, Howard spends too much time whispering and staring. The visual effects and lore of this fantasy world are all interesting enough that the movie doesn't get boring, but it does feel slow. The music is beautiful and the story feels overly complicated for no evident reason. I don't know, it just doesn't come full circle in the end.

Maybe I just didn't get it, but this seemed like it never quite made it out of Shyamalan's head. Way too bizarre in the wrong kind of way, as if the plot were created using fairy-tale-themed Mad Libs. At least the acting is decent.

Definitely mis-marketed. There should have been much more emphasis placed on the fantasy aspect of this movie and that it is a children's tale. The advertising I've seen has tried to sell it as a creepy suspense film. Go into it expecting a fairy tale/kids movie, and you'll enjoy it much more. The overt digs at Hollywood/critics and overt self-praise are pretty amusing, too.

NO TWIST! Thank God. Shyamalan tests his mettle as a real storyteller, sans gimmick finish, and while the movie ultimately fails, it's a misstep in the right direction. It's self-aware storytelling, which is interesting to a point, but the twists and turns aren't remotely surprising. The problem with telling a story that knows it's a story is that we know it's a story. Shyamalan has to be smarter than his audience, or at least a better storyteller for this to work, and the problem is: he's not.

Not the complete mess that was "The Happening" this film is more of a mix of good ideas with bad. Pacing is shot to hell, characters are poorly developed, and the writing isn't clever enough to make the audience forget that the premise is ludicrous. Still, there are flashes of genius every once in a while. Just make sure not to blink, you might just miss them.

I'm on the fence about this. On one hand this is stupid nonsense that Shyamalan pulled out of his ass, slapped on paper and made a movie out of, but on the other it's strangely unique and compelling and functions in its own world. Maybe I'm mostly fascinated with Bryce Dallas Howard.

Probably my favorite Shyamalan film. No twist. Just story, and beautiful characters -- which Shyamalan has always been good at writing. And this film just LOOKS good. While his other films tend to pick one significant color and stay with it, this one swims in them -- everything, even the most mundane household items, is vibrant and interesting.

It literally took me DAYS to finish this crap. I admit sometimes there's quirk mixed in with the awkwardness of the movie, but mostly it's just Shyamalan building up a loosely fitting story around a lousy bedtime story he made up. And of course he'd cast himself as the "writer whose ideas will change the world." To be fair, in real life, they sort of have, but not in the way he wanted, and not the way cinema as a medium deserves.

So there is a water nymph whose only power is to whisper comes to an apartment complex to tell a dude his future for no reason as it doesn't change his life in any way. Now she is low on bus fare, so the doctor-turned-super must Mcgyver-up a group of misfits to stand around so an eagle can get her. The end. Thanks M. Night.

A fairy-like creature ("narf") appears at an apartment complex, hunted by "scrunts". Nothing really fantastical happens, except for the scrunts showing up and freaking everyone out. The movie revolves around the protaganist(s) trying to figure out which roles the apartment tenants play in helping the narf. Why do we care? We don't. There's no gravity to anything. The dialogue is preposterous. The movie pokes fun at itself, which only introduces awkward levity to an already hollow premise.

It's "sink or swim" time once the climax arises, but it's hard to keep our heads above water with the weight of the film's already substantially strained plausibility. We reach out desperately for Shyamalan to throw us a life preserver, hoping the experience that we've all invested our time and intellectual interest in can be salvaged. In his final act, he tosses us an anchor instead.

Quite lame. Shyamalan should learn about character, plot and atmosphere. The characters are gimmicky (see the guy who only exercises one side of his body and the atrocious decision to have a film critic in the movie). I think he gets his loosely thrown together plots from the same manitees used by the Family Guy writers. The more I think about it the worse it gets. Lots of fog and darkness does not a good film make.

At least M. Night tries. It tries to be an interesting fairy tale and while some of it is wonky, it's really not as offensive as people think. Yes, he kills a critic and yes, he put himself as the character whos writing will inspired the world. But the direction is solid like almost always and the script is pretty bad or at most, mediocre. That's what he does usually. But I liked the beginning part and a few parts. The acting had its ups and downs.

Many times, a film may get bad reviews, or may not do that well in the box office because trailers and commercials give off the wrong impression.
