Lady of the Night

Sometimes it is difficult to understand the stardom of Shearer (outside the marriage to Thalberg). This earlier starring vehicle really accentuates why the actress was a huge star with not one but two fully-realized and thoughtful performances. Both good girl and especially bad girl are more than deftly handled. This, along with Bell's crisp direction, props up a typical St. Johns story.
