East Germany 1978. 3 years after her boyfriend Wassili's death, Nelly Senff decides to escape from behind the Berlin wall with her son, leaving her past behind. She crosses the border to start a new life in the West but soon her past starts to haunt her as the Allied Secret Service begin to question Wassili's mysterious disappearance. This film has a lot of great elements - authentic-looking settings, costumes and a suitably grubby cast - which make for a believable 1980s Berlin refugee camp. The heroine is a stubborn, intelligent and beautiful single mother who carries the film excellently. The story ticks along and appears to be interesting and suspenseful... but only for so long. Eventually the writer seems to make some poor plot choices and the end is messy. Shame, this film was nearly as good as its predecessor, Barbara.

Another decent period GDR drama with those swells of paranoia. Too many of what were perhaps red herrings seemed more dead ends though, like it'd all been cut too short.
