A marching band appears, and the band-leader prepares to give them the music for the song he wants them to play. He has prepared a large staff above their heads, and he now creates notes by making duplicates of his own head, placing them on the staff, and completing the notes with sticks and other implements taken from the band members. When he has finished, the players attempt to perform the music that has been written in such an unusual fashion. (imdb)

Perhaps Melies' best, with only A Trip to the Moon providing any competition. The ground-breaking editing and special effects, the glee that Melies obviously has doing this, and the sheer weirdness of it all makes this a masterpiece for it's time.

Méliès looks like my old math teacher, only, there are like... 7 of 'em; They were right when describing Méliès as a pioneer of horror cinema.

Pretty cool, the editing tricks in this one are actually good enough to make wonder how it was done.

Pretty darned impressive ~ a lot of work went into this. And though it's rough, it certainly has an irresistible charm.

I figured I would have been hip to Melies' tricks by now, but using human heads as musical notes was certainly unexpected. Another impressive short from an impressive figure.

Nothing to see here, just Méliès creating musical notes (for 'God Save the King') out of duplicates of his head. I am being sarcastic of course.

Funnier reworking of an earlier short of Méliès. Creative and amusing as only this guy can make early silents seem like.

Typical Melies: imaginative, outlandish and with disembodied heads.

Another experiment in early cinematic special effects from magician Méliès. This time he replicates his head for use as notes.

Méliès clearly had a real head for music (or several).

Méliès certainly had some pretty good ideas.

Nothing special, but surely a lot of time inverted in this short by Méliès, making everything fit correctly. Like in most of his works, just an interesting trick.
