Le Pont du Nord

1981
Comedy, Drama

Two women with more than a screw loose, Marie (LaFee no less!, played by Bulle Ogier) and Baptiste (played by her daughter Pascale), roam about demolition sites in a gray and wintry Paris. Maybe they are bricks in some sinister scheme, maybe they are playing a board game, maybe it's a fairy tale, maybe it's just complete nonsense and Rivette is having us on. (KG)

Inferior to Celine and Julie in almost every respect, less compelling story, less interesting characters, less mysterious... not that it isn't good, it is, but it's very hard to avoid the comparison.

It's good, but not nearly as good as Celine and Julie, though the two films are similar in many ways. However, long after watching this movie, I still find myself thinking about it fairly often. If you aren't already a fan of Jacques Rivette you should start elsewhere.

I love its sense of whimsy and its playfulness, both the main characters were great fun to follow around and there were moments that I absolutely loved like the dragon scene, the various kung fu scenes, the hilarious encounter with the man on the phone, the really touching moments the two main characters sometimes shared.

A perhaps unique mother-daughter duo that mainly leaves the impression that Pascale Ogier was headed for stardom, this is another Rivettian mix of crime, surveillance, paranoia, mystery, playfulness and Paris. To which is here added, it seems, a bit of Don Quixote. Like OUT 1, it is also a kind of document both of its creation and of its time, but it is beginning to seem as if I'm someone for whom the best Rivette is the Rivette written by Pascal Bonitzer, or, even more so, by Christine Laurent.

A cat and mouse thriller combined with Don Quixote done in the French New Wave style, and it works very well for the most part. A kind of updated version of 'Paris Belongs To Us'. Both Bulle Ogier and Pascale Ogier are intriguing characters, in particular Pascale as Baptiste whose physical performance is irresistible. The musical score sets the ominous yet playful mood. The final scene of Max and Baptiste rehearsing kata is sudden but nonetheless a suitable and very satisfying end to the film.
