A Dadaist surrealist short for children, which is still scary enough to frighten adults. Like the work of Ralph Bakshi (whose films were strictly for kids OR adults), scenes contort the distinction between reality and animation, best emphasised through a scene with a topless woman (something more children's films need -- at least 'The Rescuers' got that right).

Its name is very convenient because it claims that cinema as a modern art should have and express another "reason" which tries to grasp the ephemerality of life and the everyday impressions about the ever-changing world. It is a manifestation of the autonomy of cinema, if compared, today's so called arthouse movies are just literalized and theatricalized pseudo-cinematic forms.

It managed to hold my attention the entire time, which is a mild accomplishment for a meaningless film. The score would probabbly be lower if it weren't for the boobs.

To me its amazing how important sound and music are to experimental films. I had a hard time with this until I saw it with and interesting score.

Another exercise in fast-moving abstraction that's somehow captivating. I bet this movie was an influence on Brakhage and Svankmajer. Also, more movies should end with a naked babe :-)

Sort of interesting as an attempt to build some of Man Ray's favorite subjects for experimental still photography into something kinetic. Personally, though, I find the end result underwhelming.

Interesting enough to keep my attention for its brief runtime (3 minutes). Lots of dynamic movement, patterns and repetition. Also a naked chick, so it gets extra points for that.

This film exists because Man Ray was shown a program for an upcoming Dadaist festival and it said "an exhibition of a Dadaist film by Man Ray", so he figured he better make one. White screws and springs dance against a black background. We see the spinning lights of a carnival. Then we stare at the nude torso of Kiki of Montparnasse. Apparently a fight broke out at the premiere. I love this film!

This is very, very early, which shows that Man Ray was a very daring artist. Most probably seminal, directly and indirectly influencing every experimental filmmaker to follow.

And I thought Ballet Mecanique was pretentious and aged badly! Damn.
