L'Herbier maneuvers some seriously dangerous territory, running gallantly into a maelstrom of potent emotions and shifting allegiances, then throwing away the map. The work touches on that deeply intellectual, highly repressed form of desire, so effectual it can only be destroyed. A brilliant exploration of uncharted, violent l'amour fou, not easily forgotten.

What a vague reason to shoot a woman! Anything to add a little dangerous suave to Charles Boyer magnetic stare. Anyone would fall in love with their attempted murderer if he was Boyer. Le bonheur (1935) also gives a excellent chance to see the eccentric Michel Simon as a very obvious homosexual manager the lady in center. However the film is one of those odd fascinating ones which sadly never takes the turns I kept hoping for. Boyer puts on a strong showing regardless of the script's weaknesses.
