Le revenant

The most interesting thing about this short is what *doesn't* happen: the old man doesn't flip out when strange things start to occur, and he never runs from the room or cries for help no matter how weird things get. Does this kind of shit happen to him *every* night? Did the hotel staff warn him that that inn is haunted, so he may get some supernatural visitors and there's no point in fleeing to another room? Is this in some kind of alternate universe where ghosts always bug the living?

If anyone was born to make films about poltergeists, it's Méliès. The appearance of the woman from the fire is random even for a Méliès film, but it pays off for the viewer when she turns into a creepy ghost (Méliès uses all his tricks to conjure the ethereal presence of the apparition).

Simple but effective, with some very nice editing for the visual tricks.

Yet another in a long line of Georges Méliès wacky ghost comedies. This one is a bit better than most.
