Surprising turn from Hu, completely free of the wonderfully choreographed action sequences I expected, but every bit as visually lush and beautifully composed as Touch of Zen, if not more so. Don't expect much of a plot though.

Há 40 anos o filme de King Hu estreava no Festival de Toronto. O maior problema desse filme é a duração são quase três horas e meia de filme, do qual só pega no tranco depois de duas horas, não que estas sejam um desperdício, todo esse tempo parece transitar num universo sobrenatural que nos lembra o Ugetsu do Mizoguchi, mas o Wuxia só desenrola a narrativa para sabermos o que está ocorrendo na hora final e é belíssimo como tudo que King Hu faz. Based on an old Chinese fable it's thin on plot. But King Hu succeeds in lifting this up from its simple plot by focusing on the feel of the movie. It has some absolutely gorgeous visuals, most of them shot on beautiful location in South-Korea. So that even with a 190 min runtime the movie never overstays its welcome. And who knew a fight scene with drums could be as great as one with ordinary weapons.

My first King Hu film, and I can easily see what the hype is about. While this genre picture necessarily lapses into by-the-numbers ghost story and action movie mechanics, it often pauses, as if overwhelmed by its own majesty, for moments of meditative visualization and prophetic montage. Hu's inherent lyricism pushes through the film's mechanics. The experience you are left with is a spiritual one.
