For the first 45 minutes I was pretty smitten with this gorgeous and detailed period epic. But the veneer wears off, time seems frozen during the magic hour, the violin never stops sweeping, one character shouts hysterically, another whispers sensitively, Brad Pitt's hair blows in the wind, Julia Ormond is tossed around the male characters like a hot potato, spirit animals awaken, tragedies occur, family loyalty perseveres, and I roll my eyes and induce vomiting.

This piece of work was neural to my opinion. If you are a fan of romance and love stories then this is the movie for you to see but if you arent so into movies where the characters perform unexplainable tasks then you might be a little confused when you finish watching. Also Brad Pitt is too self-contained in this film. I feel that he is capable of a great deal more.

Beautifully shot with some incredible scenes but overall it's simply too slow and melodramatic. Brad Pitt is fantastic and I doubt I'll ever forget the line "because you love her, I will forgive you. Once! Say that again, and you are no longer my brother." Plus it's got a great closing line. "It was a good death."

A tragic tale of hope and misery, with far more downs than ups and an overall sense that things could have turned out so much better. And that's just Aiden Quinn's career! The pros and cons of this movie are Brad Pitt's beautiful long hair and his surgically removing a human heart, but I won't divulge which is the pro and which is the con.

Diamond acting. Stunning cinematography. Truly moving screenplay. Tear-jerking scenes. Vivid 3-D personas. This movie shows what family is all about. Perfect execution of showing the strong and undying bond within a family and how anything could be conquered if done together.

Epic...it's the only word that I could find at this moment. Surely not for those who like to watch Fantastic Four or the Ghost Rider. A movie that makes you want to think of it, even after weeks. Haunting.

The first half requires the viewer to buy in to this Mills & Boon trash writ large, but the rewards are bountiful: beautiful cinematography complementing an excellent cast who know just how to handle this silly material. Loses its delicate balancing act as it burrows in to the second hour, with plot developments becoming so absurd (but handled with such a po face) that it becomes derisive – poor Hopkins is landed with an affectation that obliterates any hope of the film being taken seriously!

An incredibly nauseating film to watch with writing that comes off like it came out of a cheap romance novel and acting that I could only describe as a melodramatic hamfest. But while I love a good corny film, the movie doesn't build itself off of any camp and is a bunch of awkwardly scattered plot beats that don't mesh well together and often times the drama is so laughably contrived and idiotic that I couldn't help but groan when the film reaches for the most vapid plot beats imaginable.

Wow, what an emotional rollercoaster story... Great acting by Hopkins, Pitt and the oldest brother too. Really everything that can go wrong, goes wrong... Very interesting character developments. Loved it more than I could have imagined.

So mediocre. I didn't care about any of the characters at all. And there were way too many deaths to make each death seem important or emotional. It was pretty, though. And James Horner's music offered a very nice mellow, washy texture to the film.

I just adore this film, amazing character build, epic storyline and some of the most beautiful scenery ever seen. I love how complex Tristan and Alfred are, both are flawed and idealistic but totally opposite of one another, so you can only pick one of them.

This is a particularly guilty pleasure of mine. It's a beautiful, sweeping, period family epic that all too often drinks from a bottomless well of melodrama, and I love rewatching it. The main characters are all sympathetic, yet remain mired in family conflict. There is a lot of commentary on the choices people make in life and love, which in this story all turn out rather tragically. If you sit back, eat some popcorn, and turn off your eye-rolling, this movie can be quite fun!
