Les Cowboys

The movie is amazing and touching. Through the desperate search of a father to his daughter the movie manage to provide an accurate and insightful perspective of the modern problems between european and muslim cultures and society. Besides, the narrative has a very good rhythm and avoid cliches, making this a very involving movie.

Bidegain is a writer making directing debut. So it's surprisingly really that the writing is the weakest part of this movie. As a modern day remake of The Searchers, the movie at least has some thematic value about closed mindedness and obsession. But the characters are thinly drawn . The dad in the first part is nothing more than obsession personified. This part is also helped a lot by the tour de force of Damiens. The son in the second part is just plain bland.

Les Cowboys does not run away from the provocations it excites. The movie hits hard and stays with you. It's an auspicious debut for Bidegain as a director. As to whether it can stand shoulder to shoulder with The Searchers, that'll be the day.

Lot to admire: based on westerns like The Searchers", it's not afraid to dive into topics like terrorism and clashing of cultures. It's scope and time span were surprises to me, and it contains twists that force you to view it from another angle, That's rare for a film these days, and so it's a pity that is has gaps in logic, how characters remain too distant, and how it doesn't really capture the passing of time which is very important for it's story. Photography and soundtrack are first class.
