I've never watched or read any version of Les Mis before, so I went into this movie more-or-less blind and I ended up really enjoying it. Despite it's lengthy runtime, it's briskly-paced, with pretty, expressionistic (and digitally restored!) photography and a phenomenal performance from Baur as Jean Valjean. A genuinely great film by its own merits and a classic of French cinema that deserves to have a much higher profile than it does today.

Favorite film versions of each of the main characters: Fredrich March as Jean Valjean in 1935, Geoffrey Rush as Javert in 1998, Anne Hathaway as Fantine in 2012 and, as Cosette, anybody but Claire Danes in 1998. The four and a half hour running time of this early French adaptation makes room for The Thénardiers and Éponine, and it is in many ways the most faithful to Hugo's novel, but, crucially, it gets the usually so compelling character of Javert wrong, and the first part drags quite a bit.

Very enjoyable with a pace surprisingly similar to a modern television series.

The first sound version of Les Misérables. And it's a major piece as Raymond Bernard makes it into a 3-part movie lasting a total of 4 hours and 40 minutes. Bernard quite simply directs a superb movie! Harry Baur was amazing as Jean Valjean! He really commanded the screen with his presence. Just the transformation from a rough criminal to a nobleman shows his excellence. And with Charles Vanel as his nemesis Inspecteur Javert one could feel the chill going down the spine as the hunt was on.

The best adaptation of the novel. Long enough to be a miniseries, it holds the complex plot together and keeps the pace interesting. Great performances and the powerful story makes this a favorite.

On paper this is everything I should love, a complex story, creative visuals, strong performances and a social conscience imbued throughout the film without being preachy. Right from the start it failed to really engage me, though, and I spent the next 4-5 hours wondering why I just wasn't getting into it. It doesn't develop characters, just leads them through situations, and doesn't have strong enough core to focus. Also, I like dutch angles but this has way too many.

Baur is magnificent, anchoring the film with a rich characterization. The rest of the cast frankly pales in comparison, but Baur is plenty enough to carry the film. The camera aesthetic is appealing as well, somewhere between German expressionism and Max Ophuls. The roughest patch is the beginning of part 3, which gets away from Valjean for far too long to concentrate on the French Revolution. However, things pick up again and the movie concludes very tenderly on a satisfying note.
