Les cinq diables

Not at all a horror but more of a magical realism piece, a queer Back to the Future girlmance with the Biff character actually being the needed karmic hookup, who’s also your Dad’s sister. Wait, I lost the plot somewhere in there. What’s too obvious (if I sent that Christmas card, my in-laws would send back funds for marriage counseling) is easily offset by the tremendous performance from 10-year-old Sally Dramé, a revelation as a young soul who slowly realizes she shouldn’t exist.

The Five Devils is one of the surprises of the year. As witchcraft, sorcery and supernatural powers are used by going back to the past and revealing secrets, it becomes emotionally striking with ruined lives and regrets. I love how this allows itself to be messy about things like relationships, sexuality, racism, and present it all from the POV of a child who still thinks grown-ups know what they're doing. The realisation that we're all here in spite of. That said, it feels a little underwritten - as if the characters don't know what happened in their own past until the flashbacks reveal it. Still, more than solid and Exarchopoulos and Dramé are fantastic.

If you have a supernatural kid in your movie, the kid needs to do cool shit. That's my conviction. And this kid does. It makes for a great start. But ultimately this is just a mid French drama with some supernatural stuff slabbed on. They wasted a good oppertunity. It's not interesting enough as a drama at all. It's actually kind of ridiculous

Less than the sum of its parts; there’s so many elements that I like about it, but they never come together cohesively. The sister character is particularly weak: vaguely written, poorly acted, and little-to-no chemistry with Excharpoulos. She’s basically the lynchpin of the whole plot and it all kinda crumbles around her. The kid is fantastic though

Myisus' atmospheric film with fluid camerawork mirrors Vicky's limited understanding of her world. Dramé portrays her as sympathetic and unsettling, uncovering her town's hidden prejudices. Though the fire's cause is anticlimactic, the film becomes a haunting time-travel story revealing the town's true nature.

On the one hand this is an almost grounded and realistic character drama, with a very good cast and filmed before stunning backgrounds in the French alps. But then it also has supernatural elements that are essential to the plot and are used in what I thought was a very cool way. Building on the promise of her debut film Ava, Léa Mysius confirms her status as a young filmmaker to watch out for.

"The Five Devils" is a well-acted and atmospheric film with a unique concept that ultimately fails to deliver a satisfying and cohesive story. While it is intriguing and watchable, the confusing execution of its many ideas makes it hard to fully invest in the film.
