Not since 'Polisse' has a french police drama packed such a considerable punch, but where Maïwenn's film kept its sentiments mostly in check in favor of an immersive and thoroughly researched procedural, Ly's film is bursting at it seams with anger, energy and a sense of urgency, to compensate for its somewhat trivial and calculated plot which goes completely off the rails in the final 10 minutes and that ending is a total copout. *cue Jean-Luc Picard facepalm*

A solid and frequently exciting example of “how riots happen” but it wears its influences on its sleeve too much (it’s literally just La Haine, Training Day, and Do the Right Thing put in a blender) and it tries to “both sides” it all too much - the addition of the good cop is so dated and trite, while I feel like at the end we’re meant to be feel conflicted about the kids’ actions but I was fully like “yeah man fuck those cops up this is satisfying as hell”. Bad ending.

A fantastic social thriller. Like a great crime movie, you see an entertaining narrative on the daily lives of cops. But the sociological examination unpacks the events so you can understand how a riot can be the language of the unheard. The Victor Hugo inspiration lets the story avoid cliches about criminal characters & instead make the understandable people. But the Do the Right Thing & Training Day homages become distracting. Still, this is a moving film and a high recommendation.

Powerful and surprisingly hard-edged depiction of police brutality and an uprising of the "great unwashed" - draws a long bow to connect to Hugo's eponymous novel, outside of the general themes of civil unrest, and these elements of pedantic pretension stop the film landing with the visceral charge that it should; the open-ended (and lumpy) finale is particularly frustrating and should have been conclusively tougher. Fine performances, and its incendiary nature, makes it well worth watching.

Wildly entertaining and often really intense. I didn't like the ending, but everything that came before it felt raw and authentic. I recommend a double bill with the Danish film 'Shorta'.

"How can you do a modern-day riff on Victor Hugo when there isn't a revolution going on?" Just keep telling yourself that. Yes, the influences are obvious, but are you telling me each plot that's not boy-meets-girl only gets to be told once?

Furiously effective. Owes a lot to Training Day.

I tend to be weary of politically charged movies, the trailer honestly made me want to stay away, but i'd be damned if this isn't a great piece of cinema. I was surprised at how funny it was at times and how it managed to flow effortlessly between the juvenile innocence of people living their everyday life to the dog eat dog attitude a shitty neighborhood can spark at the snap of a finger. Beautiful and powerful.

Seems to start off on a packed high and gets increasingly higher from there right up until the end. With a devastating, but uncompromising authenticity, Les Misérables entirely succeeds in showing the lives of both cops and the citizens they (proclaim to) protect and serve.

Best of its kind since Polisse, with a scene-to-scene intensity that lacks in most Hollywood flicks. Too bad that some portions of it seem totally message-driven, specially that ending and the bar scene, not to mention it poorly uses social media/drone filmmaking possibilities, but, hell, you just go along. Successfully merges genre cinema with social drama, even if rehashes much better films. Even celebrating a World Cup title, France can't help but not change at all. Like every other country.

Hot topic first film overreach. Gripping, but schematic, and to be taken as seriously as a TV cop show.
