Letzte Worte (1968) Short Film

The story of a solitary man who refuses to leave a Greek island (at one time a leper colony) is told by a strange variety of characters who don't have much to say except to repeat their tellings over and over again. But the person who has the final word on the matter, the lonely character himself, may not explain anything about his personal reasons for not abandoning the place.

Herzog in comedy mode. The play on/with language is entertaining and the Greek 'characters' make for suitable film subjects (the two policeman in particular). Mostly nonsensical, but with the last man on Spinalonga serving as the narrative keystone. Some of the black-and-white images, in particular the shots from inside of the musicians outside the window, are quite beautiful.

Pretty thoroughly strange short film that comes across as a tiny abstract study on language and film language.

There's something really special and charming about this short. Herzog has expressed that it holds significance to him personally, as he feels it was made with the sense that no history of film preceded it. I interpreted this as a man obstinately refusing to be re-socialised after finding joy in solitude, resolving to express himself exclusively through music.

Filled with lots of trademark Herzog touches. Odd characters act awkwardly in front of the camera and peculiar musical numbers resonate in our minds long after the movie ends. What's the movie about? I don't really know. What's important is that it exists in that wonderful Herzog world that I simply can't get enough of.

Some old Greek dudes play mandolin tunes and another one recites a poem. Nice black and white photography. Another one of Herzog's attempts at being artsy which feels more like an exercise in flailing around in the dark.

Oh man I love this sort of thing! This reminded me a lot of Bunuel's Las Hurdes. Herzog has such a flare for the quaint and esoteric. It may have been the music that got to me the most, but then I'm like that, music is my thing.
