Level 16

a trendy but enjoyable YA riff on THE HANDMAID'S TALE with nods to NEVER LET ME GO and GET OUT. the tired, hackneyed feminist allegory (teenage girls, each named after a film star, are groomed by a sterile, insulated "school" to adopt the "feminine virtues" and maximise their value as an aesthetic commodity) is surprisingly organic and assured in execution, but it's hard to get excited about a new, talented filmmaker when she seems as brainwashed by the zeitgeist as her characters.

Not great, unfortunately. The direction/cinematography was much better than the acting or the story. I'd be very interested to see what Esterhazy could do with good material.

A reasonable attempt at teen feminist commentary about the 'socializing' of women. Even so, it never really hits home or shocks, remaining too polite. The villainous characters have no motivation.

The darkness in this film creeps up on you over time in a very atmospheric way. You could definitely believe this could happen in real life and I think that just further props up the film in a good way. Would recommend but maybe have something light to watch afterwards.

Eh. Fairly well constructed and paced but also kind of annoying and bland.

Not a bad little bottle movie.

carries a pretty good suspense as you unravel the mystery and wait for the shoe to drop. it doesn't really build into much more though.
