Feels like the producers asked Peter Weller and Jerry Goldsmith and Stan Winston for their input and they said, "OK, I'll sketch something over a Saturday afternoon for you, but don't read too much into it." The whole film is slapped together by smart people and decent elements so it's watchable, but embarrassingly so, because even those elements are second rate.

Solid cast and creepy monster. I like the essence of the film more than I like the film. Underwater Robocop sounds pretty badass though, doesn't it?

David Webb Peoples doing the shifty eye around his office before crossing out “escape pod” with “escape bubble” he didn’t really need to cross out the escape part but he’s already copied so much from stronger material that the thrill gets him hard. Ernie Hudson doing a puzzle night is precious.

Alien/Thing ripoff that's competent (as it should be, with the talent involved both in front of and behind camera) but uninspired; if you can stay awake for the first hour you'll get some decent claustrophobic body-horror-light action and Stan Winston doing his thing in the last act, but that's a pretty big if.

Exploration of a downed vessel, failure to contain an infected crew member, packing flame throwers on a weaponless ship, borderline chest-bursting disguised as "morphing", & the classic company screw-over. Alien associations play out hard, from beats to aesthetics to Goldsmith's familiar score. I was willing to forgive that in favour of a different spin, but that spin just turns out to be The Thing. Last but not least, Peter Weller triumphantly punches a woman in the face.

A deep sea mining crew discovers a sunken Russian ship and pick up some kind of infection while exploring it. The victims morph together and undergo genetic mutation into a gooey, slavering aquamonster that the remaining crew have to fight to survive. Peter Weller and Ernie Hudson are both pretty decent despite how ludicrous the story is. It's entertaining and the excellent creature effects are worth checking out.

Hollywood always seems to make the same movie twice every year. In 1989, they actually made it 3 times, with The Abyss, DeepStar Six and this one. All 3 are basically "Aliens" in the Ocean, but unlike both The Abyss and DeepStar Six, this lacks any real suspense. The old school monster effects are always welcomed, but beyond that, the only other good part of the film was the hilarious punch sound effect in the last scene of the film.

Watchable and intriguing enough. One can dismiss the silly acting and the standard 80s tropes if one doesn't pay too much attention to them. Loses pace and presence towards the end, and the final scene completely lost the plot - too silly and out there, a drastic misalignment with the film's atmosphere from the first half. We've all seen the film. Works well for a sleepless night where you got nothing to do.

When this came out I kept confusing it with The Abyss. Similar cover etc. It is not the Abyss. It is also not Alien or The Thing. Watch any of the aforementioned films instead of this.

A lot of people say that this is a rip off of the film "Alien" but I've always felt that this had more in common with "The Thing". While this is not a great movie and had some questionable acting it's still a hell of a lot of fun.

One of the better Alien/Thing clones. Unoriginal? So what? It's fun!

Awesomely terrible. Yeah, theres a bit of a resemblance to alien, and a more than striking resemblance to the thing with the goey body bio horror stuff, but honestly, if you are going to copy something, thats the best stuff to copy, and they did actually do a decent job of it. Sometimes the acting and dialogue can be downright cringy, but you may find enjoyment in that itself, because its kind of hilarious. It would be easy to think of this as the best movie that deserves an mst3k mock.

This is what happens when you have a large special effects budget but no story to use it on. You rip off Alien in the most uninspired way possible. The only redeeming part is the absurdly paced over-done ending

good CGI for its year however there`s total lack of originality, its no more than a bad copy of Alien (shot underwater instead of space)... dose of overreacting is sad...

Granted Leviathan lacks originally, it's pretty much Alien-under-the-sea mashed with The Thing, but strangely enough it manages to stay, somewhat, fresh. Admittedly it's not as good as either of the films it borrows ideas from but it still offers decent scares and the body horror is unsettling enough to actually make the film horrific.

Good cast, but the premise and execution are just total rip-offs of Alien, The Thing, and The Abyss. It's good enough to hold your attention, but very unoriginal.

One of several similar films released at about the same time -- _The Abyss_, _Deep Star Six_, _Lords of the Deep_, and so on -- this is actually a fairly tense and effective, if predictable, variation on _The Thing_. The capable cast and direction help make up for its rather muddled storyline.

This has some hilariously inept dialogue and overacting, but ultimately comes off as an Alien/Thing hybrid without the scares or cohesive plot or purpose. Almost worth seeing for the sheer facepalmery of the ending, which is one of the stupidest and most incompetently conceived/performed "false endings" I've ever seen.

Competently acted with some great Stan Winston effects give this a passing score, but it truly is nothing more than an underwater version of Alien and The Thing.

Pretty much a clone of Alien, The Thing and The Abyss, without bringing anything new to the table - except maybe for the last five minutes which are completely bonkers in both action and tone.

A good old fashioned 1980's suspense/horror/thriller, sort of an Alien knock-off, Aliens beneath the sea.

Unoriginal and takes itself too seriously for vast portions, but there were good elements. Until the end, where pure 80s cheese took over.

Of the onslaught of underwater movies in 1988-1990, Leviathan is oddly the driest. There isn't really anything requiring this Alien-meets-The-Thing flick to be on the ocean floor except for the final five minutes. The gang of expected characters are there, with Peter Weller being the standout. Nothing is bad and the creature effects are really something. I had a good time.
