A Simenon adaptation about a father's inability to either indict or absolve his beloved son of a crime he is accused of, in spite of social pressure. The son himself is a riddle, but this isn't really a murder mystery as much as a kind of psychological and moral conundrum. It's a fascinating premise, and while the execution leaves something to be desired, it's certainly a thought-provoking film.

One of those rare, beautiful movies where every shot, every line, every physical nuance from pretty much every actor rings true. There are no words for the wonderfulness of Philippe Noiret's performance. And Andrée Tainsy makes a huge impact with almost no lines to speak. Bravo, Tavernier on a stunning directorial debut.

Atmospheric character drama following a father who realizes that his son has killed someone. It's a little bumpy, as the viewer expects some great piece of evidence to be revealed, but in the end, we hardly know much more than when we started. (There's also a fair amount of French politics tossed in, which might be meaningful to some but not to me.)
