I'm a self-professed lover of hangout movies and a sucker for coming of age stories so I was hoping this would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately it did not really make much of an impact outside of the brilliant insanity that was Bradley Cooper. The movie is shot evocatively, with atmosphere and versimillitude in spades, but I just wasn't that invested in the characters. They were well acted but I wasn't as invested. I just don't know what kept me from being really engaged.

It's a wonderfully made film with a wandering "shaggy hangout vibe," as a friend put it. Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman are startlingly impressive in their debut performances and cameos are fun. PTA always paints a gorgeous picture, even when the story is light. The child/adult relationship aspect has been received very differently by audiences, and the resolution does offer some questions. The script doesn't celebrate the prickly points, but it might not do enough to condemn them either.

PTA should aways be making these little Linklaterish laid back and just-listen-and-watch love stories where it doesn't happen much, yet a lot happens - performance and real life, the unimportance of both in a world ruled by success and money, but where is still possible to find magic in glances, gestures, weird encounters (Penn and Cooper are basically starrring spin-off shorts of their own in their brief scenes) and in a place where everything seems fabricated - but feelings. Truck scene GOAT.

As one of the rare people who generally dislikes PTA's films this one surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. Stylistically it really worked for me, and Hoffman and Haim give some of the years best performances. While I found the film to be highly engaging, the screenplay did leave me with a lot of unanswered questions regarding their character arcs and motivations. A super fun watch for sure, but ultimately it's a little too frustrating and pointless for me to fall completely in love with.

Though 2 1/2 hours, it didn't feel it at all. You still wanted more of this unique 1970s tale. It is a movie almost like no other. Though it was reminiscent of the style of Mid-90s. Great original screenplay, direction and acting, not to mention some fun cameos and an entertaining soundtrack.

While PTA undeniably gets good performances out of his freshmen leads, there was nothing in this film that I found appealing. Cooper got close; but the meandering plot, the persistent hustle, the characters and the 70's LA setting all coalesce into a disdainful slog. PTA seems to approach the era with a rose-tinted nostalgia, too often lingering in each of his scenes of mundane actions with pointless consequence. I was constantly itching for the film to be over.
