Light Years

Like Fantastic Planet, visually compelling but a little stilted. This could be due to Isaac Asimov's involvement in the dub; he's not known for his crackling dialogue.

Like Fantastic Planet, this is both terrific and flawed.

Somewhat similar to Avatar, except loads better in terms of story and style. Although the action is animated very wonkily, the imagery is still beautiful, feels very organic, and is very ... blue. The storyline seems a little ho-hum at first, but becomes more intriguing and original as it develops. I don't consider it a bad thing, but I kinda dug the villains a bit more than the heroes -- those soldiers are some badass motherfuckers!

This is for Laloux's original cut, though I do maybe prefer the music in the Weinstein-fried version.

An interesting, odd, and somewhat thought-provoking story from Isaac Asimov. The ending, I found anticlimactic. The animation is rather poor and you can't escape that. Worth watching once, maybe.

Visually interesting, too bad the story wasn't.

That was certainly a pleasant surprise, having not much in the way of expectations going in. Equally as creative, fascinating and immersive as Fantastic Planet. There are some beautifully composed sequences, powerful imagery, coupled with an original and nuanced story. The end is unfortunately abrupt, but that's not such a problem. I would love to see this in a cinema.

Disappointing. Interesting art direction and a serviceable story but the animation itself is atrocious.

With the animated work of Rene Laloux, it is almost expected that the animation is both surreal, especially in his sci-fi work where it looks like a truly alien environment, and beautifully drawn, and his last film is no expectation. Sadly, unlike Fantastic Planet where you were concerned for the main characters, the ones in this are completely uninteresting and extremely bland, and by the end the story is not as interesting either.

Os Ano Luz/Gandahar estreava há 35 anos na França. Mais uma ficção científica magnífica do Laloux que infelizmente parou de fazer filmes depois desse, deve ter ficado tão traumatizado com o Harvey Weinstein destruindo o filme dele na versão americana que largou mão dessa vida. Beautiful surreal scifi story from the director of "Fantastic Planet". The flaws in animation are redeemed by the epic story.

An interesting story accompanied ba sub-par animation and poor voice acting. Script is also not all that, but the end result is still well worth watching. All the points go to Isaac Asimov.

As usual, life on other planets is portrayed as only slightly and cosmetically different than life on earth (biologically, socially, aesthetically, etc). Actually, the only thing otherworldly and alien about "Light Years" is the crudeness of its text and glaring lack of intelligence. I suppose imaginativeness is too much to ask from science fiction, but if the setting has to be so banal, at least come up with a mature narrative. Worse than Fantastic Planet.

The delightfully psychedelic artwork largely makes up for the annoyingly psychedelic script.

For French version, Gandahar. Have yet to see the Weinstein US release.
