Well… that certainly was a sequence of images with sound. Wouldn’t call it a movie though, that would be an insult to cinema. This is trash. I understand, it was the first talking picture, but such a bad and boring result, where nothing was even remotely enjoyable. The acting, script, characters, everything; the only value it holds is as a novelty of its time

The first REAL talkie. And it's a gangster flick! Straight forward no nonsense dialogue and no bad at all for a first try! Believe me, there was MUCH worse attempts at talking during the 1928-1931 transition period. Helped to have quality supporting actors involved like longtimers Eugene Pallette, Mary Carr, Wheeler Oakman and Robert Elliott, who all made a good shift into the talkies as quality supporting stars. The two leads however pretty much disappeared soon after sound was on.

A pretty weird film. It honestly isn't good, but it definitely holds a lot of historical importance for being the first full talking picture.
