There's no way this would have been Andy's favorite movie in 1995. It wouldn't have been anybody's favorite movie in 1995.

This is just aggressively mediocre. Totally devoid of any actual sentiment, it's emotionless. The characters go through no development at all; the entire plot is just a compilation of explosions and accidents that inconvenience the protagonists to no end and leave no room for any logical, smooth progression. PD: if you're mad 'cause there are lesbians in the film you're a fucking asshole.

Are you kidding me? Is this a remake of The Lego Movie 2 with the same exact story arc/third act/climax? Are you really kidding me?? I mean, yeah, now I'm upset about the same sex storyline too, because there is nothing else that stands out in this stupid copy pasta movie! And I'm getting tired of seeing the same Waititi brand of humor in every freaking Disney production! First MCU, now this, where is he gonna pop up next, Star Wars universe? Oh, wait...

The opening precursor titles are a detrimental start; for the entire runtime, the niggling thought that none of it feels like a movie from 1995 kept popping into my head. In all honesty, it's a perfectly serviceable film with plenty of action & plenty of clichés. The animation almost looks good, but the implementation of certain ideas was mediocre. Evans makes a good Buzz; Waititi again plays a grating version of himself; SOX was the MVP, though Disney we neither want nor need a feline spinoff.

What's truly puzzling is that Lightyear ultimately plays like the sort of medium-ambition, straight-down-the-middle Pixar effort it looked like from the start. Anyone hoping for more, particularly given the recent run of winning, inventive Pixar films that’s included Turning Red, Luca, Soul, and the underrated Onward will walk away disappointed (though the younger among them might want to pick up an action figure anyway).

I don’t understand the dismay this film is garnering. Lightyear is perfectly serviceable sci-fi adventure, and the only thing that felt unnecessary was the tie-in to Toy Story. This could have very well been a movie about a no-name space ranger without the baggage of Pixar’s most beloved IP on its back. Sox stole the show and Alisha torqued a few tears out of me. I would have replaced one chase scene (out of the dozen we got) with a scene that fleshed out the parole granny and pen guy more.

A very safe, conventional origin story. It isn’t anywhere near the Toy Story movies as far as writing goes, and I didn’t find myself caring about any of the characters except for Buzz, and Sox is perhaps the best part of the whole movie. It’s also the most rushed movie I’ve seen in awhile, and from Pixar. It’s still a pretty fun time-killer, with plenty of gags and some outstanding animation and action. I enjoyed Buzz Lightyear quite a bit and Zurg was cool too. Take your kids!

For a movie intended to show us a different side of Buzz Lightyear, it's almost afraid to do anything too original...or interesting. But it's a pleasant little morality play, and it's perhaps best as a younger viewer's intro to classic sci-fi concepts (time dilation, paradoxes, multiple universes). Side note: the idea of a fun but kinda forgettable movie sparking obsession in an 8-year-old like Andy is actually rather spot-on.

This movie is just okay. No, I don't have any issue with Chris Evans being Buzz Lightyear in this, because they're clearly going for a different kind of Buzz Lightyear. I think for the most part, the story is enjoyable. I like the Interstellar-like focus on time dilation, but ultimately, it just didn't leave a big enough impression, and then ending felt rushed. I agree with people who say there should have been more space exploration. Also, anybody complaining about a 1 second kiss is an idiot.

Good evening and welcome to another episode of Whose Timeline Is It Anyway, that's right, where the timeline is made up and the people don't matter. That's right, the people are like the twists, the relevance to Toy Story, and the connections to the original universe and individuals it started with.

Mostly feels like an extended length Saturday morning cartoon space adventure show, with animation that wouldn’t have particularly stood out or impressed back in 2006. Perhaps the only emotional moment that lands is ripped off so completely from Interstellar Nolan could sue, and Disney goes back to the “twist villain” well for the hundredth time (a good twist sometimes, btw, but with Disney it’s overkill). Another point off for no Tim Allen for some dumbfuck reason.

It's hard to remember, but Pixar once delivered hit after mega-hit of truly great; even fantastic movies. Unfortunately, those days are over. 'Lightyear' is an emotionless snoozefest full of tired tropes, obvious sci-fi homages, and eye-roll inducing callbacks to the far superior 'Toy Story' movies. Chris Evans is fine as Buzz Lightyear, though the character is more hapless and lucky than he is skilled and inspiring. 2 out of 4 stars for 'Lightyear.' Stay home. Watch Toy Story instead.

This film was so funny, especially the first 45 minutes. I can see why it was Andy's favourite. I'd have had an Izzy action figure on my shelf as soon as i'd first seen it. Sox was brilliant and I'm so glad that Mo got a new pen.

Like the Cars sequels, this one feels squarely aimed at kids with little to offer anyone older. The gags are obvious and don’t land, the story is familiar to the point of being predictable almost immediately, and perhaps worst of all, it’s actually just plain boring. Even a potentially sterling Pixar-grade message about learning to live with your mistakes never comes anywhere near delivering the emotional wallop that even Pixar’s B or C tier efforts have in the past. Love Sox, though.

As a Pixar feature film, Lightyear is barely passable. It's a mixture of concepts and themes we have seen from others before. The story is mired in a repetitive cycle of failure and reattempts, with little to no character/plot development. The characters, save for Sox, are largely forgettable and lack the charm that Pixar films are known for. It could have easily gotten 5/10 if it were not for Sox. And three unfunny meaningless after-credits scenes? Seriously?

I liked that the film ended up having enough of a twist from what the trailer suggested. I would have preferred more period-accurate (outdated) 1995 family movie nods. There's a lot of running around and lapses in plot. Ultimately it's a forgettable but decent story that would have fit in with straight-to-streaming. Fav scenes: Commander Hawthorne's goodbye holographic messsage; Sox doing R2-D2 imitations; stupid gag with sandwiches that elicited several laughs from me.

Outside of the main plot points cribbing ideas from my Temporal Mechanics 101 class I took back at the Academy, the only part that comes out feeling off is a twist towards the end. Just don’t expect anything to make any real sense and strap yourself in for some light, well-paced action fluff.

Not a disaster, but just a generic, bloated space opera that has its moments in the first half -- a space trooper dealing with the fact it's nearly impossible to change fate, because he screwed up big time for being so arrogant and now the entire troop is trapped in this strange planet -- and just embraces laziness in the second, with the expected group of misfits vs massive high-tech villain. The fact it actually tries to force a multiverse is also kinda laughable.

This would be a perfectly acceptable film from other animation studios, but for Pixar it's a big disappointment. There are some good ideas like Buzz's obsession about his mission and missing out on all the good things of life. It just lacks a soul: its world is like a computer generated average of other sci-fi films, the characters are not interesting and the attempts at humor fall flat. The "controversial" kiss lasts like a second, and I cannot comprehend how it has generated protests.

It reminded me so much of watching Wall-E, you're sitting there thinking "This is genius-level visual story telling," and "I wish I had seen this at the cinema" and "Pixar you've done it again", but it quickly peters out and there's just no story there to sustain the run time. By the time they solved whatever they were trying to solve I had completely lost focus and I can't really even tell you how the film ended. The characters seemed happy though, I think. Pixar you really have done it again.

Poor reviews helped properly set my expectations, but this is not bad. Nor is it the worst from Pixar or even in that tier. It's nothing near the Toy Story films, but obviously doesn't try to be. It is humorous and entertaining with a strong start and some fun characters. What really doesn't work about it: too much of it's focus is on having a good sci-fi plot. That part of it is bad and unoriginal. PIXAR used to be miles ahead of Disney Studios but now seems to have actually fallen behind.

A nice story featuring Buzz in the film role Andy from Toy Story first saw him in, that led to him wanting the famous Buzz toy featured in said Toy Story films. It has some interesting twists although its not greatly memorable in and of itself. It felt a bit like a long TV show, rather than a particularly good, large scale film as such. It explains the origins of the famous 'to infinity...and beyond' catchphrase.

Visually appealing. Cat was by far the best part of the whole film. Most of the other comedy fell flat. It's not as bad as the 5.2 aggregate on IMDb as that's mostly hate for not having Tim Allen back. I graded this just on what it was forgetting that anyone else played the role as that's not fair to those that worked on this film aside from the politics and cancel culture world we reside in. 6.4 for me. Solid, if not great entry. A rare 80% tomatoes for both critics and audience w such a low IM

The same sex peck on the cheek is not a real issue, the writers having a entire pack of characters bumble their way through the story is. The rest of the package is acceptable, but the plot progression could stand to be a little less by the numbers.

An okay entry into the Pixar/Disney Toy Story Universe. Evans can never match the nostalgia of the original Tim Allen voice performance, but does right by the character. Mistakes are made and lessons learned in this rag-tag team adventure. The movie itself does not stand out in the Toy Story canon, but Peter Sohn, as Sox the robot cat does match up to the best characters in this series. Original PSI:76

I actually didn’t mind this through most of its runtime, mostly because the action and serviceable story beats were there—and for quite a while it feels like it’s building to a glorious payoff in true Pixar fashion. But instead the finale fizzles. The film doesn’t swing big enough for the final conflict or the emotional reckoning Buzz should be going through. In fact, he’s got a more impactful arc in Toy Story.

Despite its lackluster story, “Lightyear” is a visually stunning and thrilling space adventure that the whole family will enjoy. The likable characters and humor, particularly Sox, make up for the film's flaws, and the action sequences are sure to keep audiences engaged. While it may not be Pixar’s best work, “Lightyear” is still a fun and exciting addition to the “Toy Story” franchise.
