Ishaan Awasthi is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colours, fish, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. And Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. When he gets into far more trouble than his parents can handle, he is packed off to a boarding school to 'be disciplined'... (imdb)

beste bollywood film die ik ooit zag!...

The first half of the film has a brilliant kind of new wave feel to it. The second half with Khan descends into this horrible narcissistic rubbish. He is portrayed so utterly flawless that he might as well be wearing a crown of thorns and walking on water during his scenes. The film ultimately cops out by perpetuating this myth that everyone with a disability is simply hiding some kind of exceptional talent.

Exceptional performance by the young kid. The first half of the movie is brilliant. The moment Amir Khan enters the stage, it becomes another Indian film.

If a talented editor got a hold of this it might be a solid film. It'd still be over-sentimental and the kid's performance would still be uneven and I still wouldn't like it much, but at least it wouldn't be 160 minutes with an endless array of draggy scenes, and that's without touching the excessive musical numbers that sometimes grind the film to a halt. I appreciate the core of the film and what it has to say, and it's quite well shot, but it's just not very good as a whole.

15-minute story told in 160 minutes, but I didn't really mind that much. Good job all around.

I'm not dyslexic, I'm ADHD, but dammit, close enough, I definitely could relate to this kid, and came closing to crying at points. The first half does a really great job of illustrating neurodivergence to an Neurotypical audience through some really clever cinematic choices. The second half, however, goes downhill a bit, slowly wandering more and more into just typical inspirational, feel-good family film kind of territory.

Incredibly pretentious movie that insults the audience's intelligence. Aamir Khan never impressed me with his acting and I doubt he'll impress me with his directing if this first venture of his into the field is him actually trying. I couldn't care about the main character either. It doesn't even manage to manipulate emotions since it's so contrived and preachy. Skip it.

Great film - considering that it comes from Bollywood - an important message that needs to be delivered to Indian/Asian/Developing-nation parents. Could have been an exceptional film if it had sustained the ratio of realism/melodramatism through to the end.

Probably my favorite Aamir Khan film. Maybe a bit over the top at some points, but then again, most Bollywood films are I guess..? But man, it makes you feel good. *Good

For many, it may feel like an over-sentimental sob story and it is. But it is also a film that was hugely important and damn it, the film might actually make you tear up.

Very preachy and on the nose... the movie is trying too hard to force you to create some deep emotions or something.

It doesn't get good until Aamir Khan shows up maybe after 1 hour.

I sure do love me a good Bollywood musical. And if nothing else, this movie is likely to make you want to go paint a picture of something.

I could hardly stand that spastic for an hour. All he needed was a good 'discipline' and that I hope he'll receive it in that boarding school! But this is a movie therefore I am sure he'll get a more 'gentle' pedagogical treatment... Anyway, I don't care to know consequences by wasting another one and an half hour on those.

Entertainment: 4/4 -- except for the crappy first 10 minutes, the rest of the movie was captivating. Spirituality: 2/3 -- what it really means to care for a child. Sustainability: 1/3 -- equality of all children.

Inspirational and heartwarming movie about a dyslexic young boy with a creative mind and an art teacher who helps him overcome his disability. Some of the movie was painful to watch, and some of the dialog difficult to understand. I liked the artistic creativity. My heart went out to the boy with the crushed spirit. but finally there was hope and a somewhat sappy over the top happy ending.

Difficult to dislike too much but there's enough schmaltz here to make Steven Spielberg blush. It gets aggressively and manipulatively sentimental in a somewhat unpleasant way. The actor who played the kid doesn't really jump off the screen, which would have really helped here. Khan is pretty good, but the whole film hits you over the head with everything to the point where it isn't what it probably should be. Like a lot of Bollywood, way longer than it needs to be.

Impressive directorial debut by Aamir Khan. Predictable and a bit syrupy, but still an enjoyable movie. I like movies with messages, and this one carries one quite important.
