A fine political drama with, considering Daniel Day-Lewis's involvement, unsurprisingly great acting. Though one may be surprised by how many of the most engaging scenes, involving Congressional debates, actually don't involve Lincoln/Day-Lewis. Definitely one worth checking out if you're in the mood for slightly more austere cinema. My one gripe is John Williams' score - generic, often corny, maybe his weakest ever.

Despite being surprisingly witty and genuinely interesting as a historical drama, Lincoln does get a bit stale in the long run, due to some longhaired dialog (sample line: "how will history remember me?") and a general disregard of the "show don't tell" mantra, Spielberg normally masters. But it should be applauded for its sober handling of the material and obviously for Day-Lewis, who yet again proves he's the God of Acting.

Spielberg's films have become so empty lately, utterly lacking in the virtuoso features that used to make him a household name. Where are the sparks of originality, the feelings of great intensity that rock you to your core? Instead we get a talky, awards friendly, historical reenactment that takes absolutely zero risks. I can't believe DDL is going to win an Oscar for this. A totally unspectacular film from a past its prime director.

Despite being a bit of a 'safe' movie that doesn't do anything unpredictable, Lincoln is still a pretty effective character drama. Yes, it's little more than old dudes in stuffy rooms talking about slavery (eerily similar to all the city hall meetings I visit on a weekly basis) but it's damn good at what it does. Day-Lewis definitely nails it, but Tommy Lee Jones was the real standout. I must admit to geting teary-eyed at the final courtroom scene. Well played, Steven. Well played.

Great political biopic with some brains from Spielberg. It's the best he's done in awhile, but in the end it's the screenplay and stellar cast that really drive it home. Daniel Day-Lewis is untouchable.

A real treat if you enjoy a nice ensemble cast and great acting. Not so much if you like a story that doesn't drag forever and have a bunch of pointless characters. Lincoln's entire family was useless to this story which is even more infuriating considering the movie is 2 and a half hours. DDL should join the prestigious 3 Oscar club. Also, total cop out not showing Lincoln getting killed.

Well performed by a great cast, but it is written as if every character has a team of speech writers following them around. Every scene is so on-the-nose that it feels more like an after school special than something that really happened.

Overlong and horribly written, this film is an absolute bore. All the leading performances are overacted, stilted and ridiculous, including Daniel Day-Lewis. It's hard to tell if this is mainly because of a laughably bad screenplay, poor delivery of lines by the cast, lack of vision from the director, or all three combined. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is particularly atrocious. The film isn't even worth watching for the sets, costumes and general production value, as none is especially impressive.

I expected an above-average biopic and instead I watched an incredible performance-driven political drama, powered by one of the most clever and equally emotional scripts ever written, in addition to Daniel Day Lewis' heartbreaking portrayal of the president during his last years. Spielberg's direction is simple, but sincere. John Williams is as spectacular as he was 30+ years ago, setting the mood of the war, country, and president at the time. The vote scene is my favorite scene from 2012.

More of a history lesson than a movie, and although it is certainly the biopic that Abraham Lincoln deserves, history get's in the way of a more engaging story. If The Oscars don't make a special category this year, and Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win it for "best actor of all time", I'll frown for a month and tut whenever I think about it. For now I am going to rest my mind, for it has been completely blown by the fact the Republicans used to be the good guys. Seriously, what?!

Maybe if you're a history buff and the politics of passing the 13th amendment excite you, Lincoln is an interesting story. But as great as the performances are and a chance to see a real, live Lincoln on screen, nothing can save the lack of a compelling story. There is just not enough meat around this event, and the film does a really poor job of showing Lincoln changing hearts and minds when the focus is just on the shady tactics used. His family story ends up completely irrelevant to the plot.

A much more dialogue-heavy film than I expected with less grandeur and artificiality. Who knew a movie about the 13th amendment would be so suspenseful? It was also a history lesson for me.
Some excellent performances from DDL, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field. Plenty of great character actors made this even more fun - including Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg and others.
Not sure if its a movie I need to see more than once, but a solid movie and worth recommending.

By framing this story within the months leading to passage of the 13th amendment, subplots involving Lincoln's family seem incomplete or out of context. The film could have contained more historical value if it focused on the people most responsible for abolishing slavery. Despite the great performances, the cast is distracting as recognizable actors play little to no significant role in the film. Again, the filmmakers overreached when the script only allows time for a single focused message.

It's really interesting to see what was behind the political curtain of the Lincoln Aera, and Spielberg did a great job, but I can't help myself I was really bored in times and had some problems to follow the plot. Nevertheless Daniel Day-Lewis fits perfect in this role of one of the most important presidents in US history.

Spielberg holds the reigns tight in what could have easily turned into a film about the popular sensationalist-opinion the majority of Americans have about Lincoln, rather than what history tells us. Still, the painfully postured DDL in silhouette in front of a window or a fire becomes cliche about midway through. Praise for the photography, DDL, and a fantastic screenplay are duly justified.

I tip my stovepipe hat to Daniel Day-Lewis who lived up to the immense hype and delivered a knockout performance. Spielberg has his typical Hollywood moments but it's toned down quite a bit from what seems to be his norm when he makes serious/sentimental movies. There are also moments where characters are speaking in an unrealistic "earnest theatrics" style instead of conversationally. Both of these criticisms are easily forgivable considering how great the rest of the movie is.

Obviously a strong central performance from DDL, but the film suffers from a schizophrenic focus. Spielberg is split between the story of the 13th Am. and obligatory biopic details, both of which are steeped in myth. The family plot doesn't go anywhere and the assassination epilogue feels shoehorned. Meanwhile the political wrangling lacks suspense, the antagonists are one note and without context (to be fair they were epic dicks). Lincoln needs to be watched in conjunction with other material.

A solid film about one of the greatest leaders of America, but you sit back with a feeling that it could have been much better. Like War Horse, Lincoln is beautifully staged as only Spielberg does it. Sadly the story is never truly engaging and what holds it together is an (once again) amazing performance by DDL. Most of the other characters outside the political part seems misplaced - specially the whole Lincoln family, and the humorous touch just seems of in a drama of this magnitude.

The overstuffed cast kept distracting me (hey, it's Gale from Breaking Bad! And the villain from Chronicle! And there's Walton Goggins!), and it's a bit overwrought (as biopics usually are), but there's no denying that Lincoln is a masterful effort from all involved. DDL was handed another Oscar the moment cameras started rolling.

Spielberg's best work since Catch Me If You Can. Unlike most of his films Lincoln shows restraint and a surprising lack of sentimentality. Its greatest strength lies in a brilliant screenplay that feels stagey at times, but is moving, informative and doesn't have an ounce of fat. As a bonus you have great acting from nearly every cast member, from leads Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, to supporting roles by James Spader, Hal Holbrook, John Hawkes, JGL, and David Strathairn.

Epic in proportion and beautifully shot, but the film felt devoid of any true emotional potency to me. Don't get me wrong, this film was a solid historical drama, but underneath the consummate performances of DDL and Jones, I couldn't get over how stale and drawn out the whole movie felt. I think this could have easily won best picture if it had been tightened up and hadn't had played it so safe. Ultimately, all I can say is that I respect the effort put forth here, but did not enjoy the film.

A film that lacks invention and artistic vision and opts instead for a safe, uninspiring retelling of Lincoln's final months. I always feel guilty when I feel that a critically acclaimed film is overrated...but Lincoln is overrated. Yes, I will absolutely praise Daniel Day-Lewis's performance, as it's one of those rare bits of acting where you forget that you're not looking at the actual person. But I found the pacing to be awful, and a lot of the film dragged. I was honestly bored in some spots. I also think that the depiction of Lincoln as a person has been greatly idealized.

Pretty good, but not a great film (which is somewhat disappointing with everything it had going for it). The cast was phenomenal, but it almost felt like they had to shoehorn everyone in because there were so many notable actors/actresses. It seems like every character speaks in monologues, but given the time period and the subject matter (politics!), I can forgive it.

Day-Lewis's Lincoln may as well be a resurrection, and I could watch Jones drop sick burns on racists all day. Pandering. Only it's disguised by the onslaught of the best acting I've seen in a while - and I'm not talking about DDL - because Jones stole the show. Solid political-historical drama with a surprising freshness and immediacy to it. Scene-stealing Tommy Lee Jones' Thaddeus Stevens is a great character which actually rivals Lincoln as the main protagonist as he has the strongest story arc. Day-Lewis, Strathairn and Spader shine as well. And I dig the ingenious way Spielberg withholds the assassination scene thereby keeping both the suspense and the surprise. Could have been tighter with out the redundant Lincoln family.

Unwatchable. I'd rather watch dried paint for a couple of hours than another second of this. Lincoln is obviously manufactured to pander to American nationalism, and as historians have pointed out, has little to do with actual history. Steven Spielberg does a great job in purging the movie of any possible interpretations and force-feeds the viewer the text. This makes the movie painfully boring to watch, given how shallow the script is.

Conventional Oscar fluff, with all the sappy tropes and pretense of importance that you can imagine. It's competent in terms of fulfilling its conventions, but it's the usual parley of saying "slavery is bad, guys!" in the most superficial way imaginable, portraying any slave owner as a hapless dofus while lionize abolitionist which drags on for so long it was hard to care by the end. The film lacks any real historical insight or nuance on the topic, so it's hard to take seriously.

Lincoln is a good movie, and it's well worth your time if for no other reason than to see the film that couple potentially take three of the four acting Oscars at this year's Academy Awards. It also allows you to lose yourself in the atmosphere; you feel as if you're back in the time when Lincoln was still alive, It would have been nicer for Lincoln to have been written as more complex, and it could have used tighter editing, but it's still a very enjoyable film that is absolutely worth seeing.

DDL is flawless. Strathairn, and Spader also give admirable performances. However outside of the acting nothing really shines. Spielberg (and Williams for that matter) are simply going through the motions. Yes, everything is well executed, but we've seen it done too many times. When will they learn that simply changing the subject matter doesn't amount to a good film. At this point Spielberg is nothing more than a decaying husk copying his previous works.

I can't help but feel that this is quite the oscar bait. The acting is superb and both Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones are outstanding in their respective roles, however, the movie is very slow, long and very serious. It takes quite a lot of patience to get through it and could probably have been cut down a bit. Luckily it picks up a bit in the third act and gets better until the inevitable climax. It's not bad, but definitely not a movie I could watch again and again.

I'm not sure whether I'm underrating or overrating this. 1st half strained my attention. The lengthy running time wouldn't necessarily suggest this, but it has a very "family friendly" feel to it, moreso than I really prefer, e.g. there's quite a bit of [often ineffectual] humor and too much effort is spent on reminding us what a simple family man Lincoln was). It also failed to overcome that it was telling a well-known story and generate much tension. Day-Lewis' accolades are well-deserved.

Homing in on one very specific event both allows us to see more of lincolns character than a full life bio and avoids cliche pitfalls of those bios. Its very interesting to watch as lewis plays Lincoln as more down to earth than the man has ever been portrayed while speilberg films him as more of a legend than ever.. Lincoln literally steals the spotlight as he is often the only character bathed in light. He remains standing as his wife crumbles to the floor. Its almost overdone but not quite

About as interesting as its action counterpart Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This movie had a lot of scenes that dragged on and on. The saving grace of this movie relied on two things. Tommy Lee Jones and the scenes in House of Representatives. Otherwise, I will admit that Daniel Day-Lewis looked like a convincing Lincoln, but then if that is how Lincoln acted in life, he was pretty boring. He just wasn't as inspiring as I was hoping he would be. Good thing Jones was in this to make it good.

Acting: phenomenal across the board. Maintains its atmosphere throughout and has a surprising amount of humor. Cinematography: uneven, at times great, at other times bordering on TV-movie-esque. Just keep hurling Oscars at Daniel Day-Lewis, he's good for it.

Can Sally Field ever act any differently? It`s like she's always playing the same character, sheesh! Other than that, Daniel Day Lewis is tops and the visual effects are shit.

Lumbering hulk of a Hollywood epic, with many of Stephen Spielberg's worst tricks deployed most annoyingly. The acting, however, is superb, and the reason to see this clunker.

Sort of hard to rate for me. When it's good, it's really, really good. But when it's not, it's often boring, clichéd and predictable. Overall I wasn't too impressed, but there are a few stand outs: the magnificent Euclid scene, some other powerful scenes and the amazing performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. I was bored most of the first half, but the second half was a lot better, though the ending felt rushed. Worth watching once for the few stand out moments, but this film could have been much more.

Almost never was I so excited about an already known outcome.

Lincoln does resort to the kind of simplications that are endemic to Hollywood historical films, especially ones directed by Spielberg, but his worst tendencies have generally been reigned in for this surprisingly restrained take on a pivotal moment in American history that presents a less bombastic view of the political past of men negotiating in dimly lit rooms. It's a little stilted and conventional, but overall it's the greatest film about Lincoln since the halycon days of Ford.
