Enjoyable low-stakes crime thriller coasts entirely on its uniformly excellent principal performers -- especially Rains as the slinky, debonair villain (his opening scene is a terrific curtain-raiser!) Milland's competent (if uninspired) direction keeps things moving along, and while the screenplay takes many rambling digressions, the actors keep everything on track.

An enjoyable bit of silliness, with some strange vignettes...like the opening scene of Claude Rains getting breakfast for his cat. And I don't think there is a fado club with so much floor space in all of Portugal, and certainly not in the (cramped/quaint) Alfama. The leads are all solid. It appears there was no budget for an accent coach. The Portuguese is mostly pronounced correctly, but just barely...it's a shock to hear the fruit seller in Sintra speak REAL Portuguese!
