You don't need to be a psychoanalist to understand the impact an unstable childhood can have on a person's mental health and well-being, and through Brando's personal recordings, we get a moving, intimate and deeply candid glimpse into the life and work of both the remarkable actor and anguished individual that he was. On par with 'Amy' which came out the same year.

Wow! Very impressed with this documentary about Marlon Brando, narrated by the actor himself, from his own audio recordings. Some profound thoughts to be found. Well edited, beautiful music, interesting archive footage and movie clips.

There are times when you just may hate yourself for eavesdropping on Marlon posthumously. I couldn't stop myself.

An achievement in narrative. The entire story is told by Marlon himself; no "objectivity" is instilled by the filmmakers and, as a result, the film's perspective is both profoundly intimate and confusing/incomplete.

We see the world through the ego (vocal recordings) of MB. Some of his insights into what acting is and how to create a compelling scene are unique and incisive. Other times, eg. where he claims to rewrite Apocalypse Now entirely, are strange and delusional. He seemed to get swept away by his own person at some point in his career, and with 16 kids to his name, he probably enjoyed it.

I think this is what Amy wanted to be; or, maybe, what everyone else sees in Amy. A portrait of the artist, told by the artist. Mental minutiae rendered in broad strokes, Brando's voice a neverending source of knowledge and excitement. But despite its poetic approach, the film gets bogged down by convention. One wishes we could ditch the music and the B-roll in order to luxuriate purely in the man and his myth. Mostly great, sporadically boring.

Whereas Kapadia's Amy was a fully rendered portrait of its subject told through external anecdotes, Marlon lends itself to undertaking the role of self-portrait through the subject's own voice recordings. There's a vital dialogue to be had in regards to these two films and how they signify a larger sea change in biographical documentaries. This film, however, is far less concrete. Brando still remains inscrutable, ephemeral in his presence, yet I was deeply moved and sated by this intimate work.

Using audio tapes with hundreds of hours of Marlon Brando talking about himself made for a in-depth understanding of the man. Quality doc!

There's a stream of consciousness quality to Listen to Me Marlon that may take a while to penetrate, but once you do, the rhythm of Marlon's tapes combined with an excellent soundtrack and visual footage, reveal a highly engaging portrait.
